[SOLVED] Device Manager - The Configuration Registry Database Corrupt

Hello all,

The problems began when Windows Update mysteriously offered updates to drivers I already had installed or for devices that I don't have (i.e. Intel Xeon E3). I made a System Restore point and updated, only for it to fail and my video driver broken.

Opening the device manager and attempting to update drivers yielded this:

After restoring the System Restore point, I googled and found a lot of people asked the same question on this forum, but each solution was marked "this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good," so I guess I will post yet another one to get this issue solved.

Is there perhaps a general solution to this problem, so we don't have to keep asking you guys this question?

I am running Windows 10 Pro x64 build 1809 and SFCFix did not solve the problem (I attached SFCFix.txt anyways)

As a side note: I actually would not care about this problem except I started getting BSODs of DPC_Watchdog_Violation (which apparently stems from outdated drivers) and plug-and-play wasn't working (I'd have to manually install drivers in device manager whenever I inserted a new USB stick for example) and I couldn't install VMWare (looking through the logs, lo and behold I find "The Configuration Registry Database Corrupt") and of course, not being able to update means I'm stuck on an insecure version of Windows.

Update: I have tried to do an in-place upgrade (make a bootable Windows USB and running setup.exe) but it fails, saying "Windows 10 installation has failed." Any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply!

Replacing the Drivers Hive manually seems to have done the trick! Does that mean that any visitor with the same "The Configuration Registry Database Is Corrupt" problem can download and install that drivers.zip file and get fixed? Or is this somehow still specific to M1N1XN's and my case?

However, I am still facing updates trying to do Windows Update. Whenever I try to install "2019-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1809 for x64-based Systems (KB4507469)," it fails and says "undoing changes" (not exact words; something along those lines) upon restart. Is this a separate issue, or is this a result of a corrupted configuration registry? Should I make a separate thread for this issue?

Nope. It's dependent upon the OS version. Attempt the update again and attach CBS.log and C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log.

You could also try upgrading to 1903 directly using the Media Creation Tool.

OK, I successfully updated to 1903 by using the Windows 10 May 2019 Update Assistant from here.

The graphics driver broke again after installing. Trying to update it from Device Manager ended with "Windows could not find drivers for your device" (the window appeared as soon as I clicked "Search automatically for updated driver software," which was weird). I checked Windows Updates, but it said I was up to date (I have "Receive updates for other Microsoft products" on).

However, I was able to update with drivers from Nvidia website, so it looks like my configuration registry database is fine.

However however, there are still three other unknown devices in Device Manager that refuse to get installed (and I don't know what these devices even are!)

I know this is most likely not related to the original issue, but could you please help me with this? I can open a separate thread if you prefer that.

That's nice :) Thank you for the kind words. Please find out the hardware IDs of the devices and update them via manufacturer's website, not through Windows Update.

OK, the hardware ID's are TAP0901T, taphss6, and tapexpressvpn. Googling for downloads came back with some sketchy websites (like this for TAP0901T), so I'm not sure if I should download those.

taphss6 seems to be for Hotspot Shield, which I no longer use; would it be safe to uninstall taphss6?

tapexpressvpn, from the name, seems to be from ExpressVPN, which I've been trying to install but fails every time (I have yet to talk to them about how to fix that!). Might uninstalling tapexpressvpn fix the ExpressVPN install?

Also, from this website, it seems that TAP0901T is for Toshiba HDD protection, but I don't even have a Toshiba drive, which is strange (I have jailbroken with PanGu before, but that was many years ago, and I don't think I did it on this computer; of course, I don't use it anymore). Should I uninstall that too?

I'm just nervous to uninstall the devices because it says "Advanced" next to it haha

I'd suspect that TAP is related to P2P/VPN, Tunnelling software. Feel free to uninstall all three and delete the drivers while uninstalling.

OK, I uninstalled all of them, but it did not fix the ExpressVPN installation problem (I get error 0x80070643 whenever I try to install it).

I already sent an email to ExpressVPN support, and hopefully, they send a helpful reply.

Okay, let's start with the fundamentals, if you open Start ->Run and type in services.msc followed by the Enter key, is your Windows Installer servcie running? If no, please enable it and retry the setup. If yes, restart it and run the setup. If you still get the error, please try disabling your security software.

Did you have an earlier version of the software installed on the system?

FRST Registry Search
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
3. Copy and paste ExpressVPN into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
4. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.

Sorry for not responding earlier; I had to study for today's final exams.

The Windows Installer service wasn't running, so I started it, and it worked! Such a simple but effective fix.

(meanwhile, ExpressVPN support hasn't even responded yet haha)

Just one more thing; you said that the drivers hive is OS version specific. Is there any way of "generating" this file, so that future visitors don't have to make new posts asking for help for newer builds of Windows 10?

For example, today, my laptop stopped booting, BSODing with stop code BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO, which sounds like something wrong with those same files in C:\Windows\System32\config (my RegBack is empty, unfortunately). It's on an older version of Windows though (x64 version 1803 build 17134), so I can't use the file from my other PC or the drivers.zip that you gave me.

Any suggestions on how we could get those config files without having to ask/bother you again in the future?

OK, in that case, do you have any guides where regular users like me can access the system images and use them to fix broken registry files?

I tried fixing my laptop myself by following this guide I found on this forum but got stuck when it said RegFileExport.exe was incompatible with the version of Windows I was running (I was on a bootable USB). Now, I guess I could try running RegFileExport.exe on Hiren’s BootCD PE, but I don't have any more spare USBs that I can format.

Do you have any advice on how to fix BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO?
