For the past three weeks, I have been having a persistent problem. When I power up the desktop, as soon as the desktop screen with all the icons appear, and before a connection with the modem gets established, the screen freezes up and no further loading takes place. None of the icons respond to the mouse.
The only way to overcome this problem is to hold the power button in, shut the computer down and re-power up. I know this is not advisable, but I have not got another option. I might have to repeat that several times before the desktop decides to power up fully/correctly.

Once the desktop powers up correctly, it behaves perfectly well at all times, with no hint of any problem.
Full scans with both, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO and Eset NOD32 Antivirus 5, do not detect any problem!

I have been getting assistance from Corrine, in LandzDown Forum.....and this is the thread of the topic:
Desktop screen freezes on start up

On Corrines advice, a number of tests have been carried out, and last night a CBS.log was produced.

Corrine was considering asking me to do a chkdsk /r but, although the chance is small, chkdsk can result in dataloss. As a result, she advised me to come to Sysnative.com so Richard or Tom can take a look at my CBS.log and determine first if that is necessary.

One additional piece of information is that, my hard drive does not produce any unusual noises. It sounds no more noisy than when the desktop was new.

Thank you in advance for your assistance,
Basil

Thank you, Basil, and welcome to Sysnative! Richard (niermiro) and Tom will be looking at your log. It often takes longer to review a CBS.log and provide the next step than malware analysis so your patience is appreciated.

Thank you Corrine,
Yes....I had a look at my CBS.log and I don't know how these guys make sense of it. My admiration for people like that, grows by the day!...:thud:

Hello Basil, and welcome to Sysnative :)

There is nothing in your CBS.log to be overly concerned amount at this time. In addition, I see no corruptions there to explain your other symptoms.

However, there is something there. The repeated repairing of components you are being reported is being caused by what I currently believe is a bug in KB2685811.

I can provide only very few details at this time, and request a few days to seek clarification from Microsoft.

Thank you for your patience,

Richard

Thank you Richard,

Wow..!!!...That was lighting fast! A possible bug in an update did not even cross my mind. I look forward to a clarification from Microsoft in due course.

Thank you again

No problem :)

This apparent bug has been giving me massive headaches for days, and I can now spot it a mile off!

Quick Update

After suffering with this frozen screen problem for about two months, for the last couple of weeks the computer has again been working perfectly well.

What have I done to rectify the problem?.....Absolutely NOTHING!!......:smile9:
Somehow, the gremlins seem to have decided that my computer did not provide them with enough fan.....and they seem to have gone....

Don't you just love it, when problems just seem to rectify themselves....:hysterical:
