Cursor Randomly Freezes or Disappears - Unfixable?!

When you clean installed Windows 10, did it freeze even then?

Did you test it before installing any 3rd party software or did you immediately install CCleaner, Carbonite,MBAM etc?

If it's not 3rd party software causing it, I'm leaning toward the pad itself.

The clean install should have fixed it.

Not immediately. The problems began again after Windows was in use for a brief period.

After the backup was restored from an external HD & Carbonite was installed in order to restore newer files, everything seemed fine. The cursor problems began shortly after that, before CCleaner and MBAM were installed.

If it's not 3rd party software causing it, I'm leaning toward the pad itself.

The clean install should have fixed it.

I should mention that before the clean install, I was getting a BSOD in addition to the cursor failure. The install cured the BSOD but the cursor problem eventually returned. If it helps, I previously posted a thread on the BSOD issue over on Bleeping Computer.

I agree that the clean install should have solved the cursor issues, but disconnecting the ac adapter & doing a hard shutdown (by holding down the power button for 20 seconds or so) and then restarting, almost always recovers the cursor. If the touchpad was the culprit, you wouldn't think that trick would work so consistently.

Go ahead and run the Sysnative App. I want to take a look at some of the logs it generates.

I appreciate the help! Although they were helpful with the BSOD, I tried to start a new thread on the other forum about this issue but no one ever responded.

The Sysnative app zip file is attached. I was able to run the app while the cursor was frozen (good timing for a change :)

Right after running it, the keyboard stopped working though

. I manually updated the keyboard driver via Control Panel > Device Manager > Update Driver Software > "Browse my computer..." > "Let me pick from a list of device drivers..." I then selected the only driver shown. After Rebooting the PC, both the keyboard and cursor were functional again.

Just before the keyboard quit working (I was using a mouse at that point), I saw a message flash by for a second indicating that Carbonite was backing up files. Coincidence? Hmm...

Lets test the RAM and remove that from suspicion.

Test RAM with PassMark MemTest86

The RAM tested good but getting there was quite the journey...

MemTest86 installed fine but the PC wouldn't recognize the flash drive as bootable, even though it has always worked fine for transferring files, etc. I finally got the program installed and working on a different flash drive with another machine but when I used it with the problem PC, it would detect the drive but all I would get is a black screen when I tried to boot to it.

At that point I decided to use the memory tester included with Windows 10. I ran it in the "extended" mode but it kept getting stuck at 21%. After resorting to the basic test, I made the rude discovery that the application hadn't actually logged any results (!) (yes, I searched ALL Event Viewer entries). Googling revealed that this is a common issue with this app

After trying the other USB ports on the problem machine using the working flash drive again, memtest86 finally booted up. The ram passed with no errors.

This rules out the RAM. Did you happen to save the html report?

I would suggest another clean install but don't install any 3rd party software until you test it for a day. If it works, install one of the software's at a time using the PC for a day in between.

If after installing a particular software and it starts again, you have your culprit.

I will say, I used Carbonite years ago and it caused a handful of issues and prompted me to start using Macrium Reflect. It is not cloud based but it works and works well.

Thanks, I will try a re-install once more when I have time and will report back. FWIW, Carbonite has been in use on this machine for years with no issues.

Right now I'm trying to get Linux working on an old laptop so the owner will have something to use while I'm doing the backup & re-install. The Linux install has proven to be it's own PITA
