Hello Sysnative Experts,

Hope you're all doing well.

Background Info.

I migrated a Win 2022 VM (VMWare) to Physical a couple of days ago, and encountered an error with the 2025-03 CU update KB5053603. The update installs find, and on server restart, it will apply updates until 9% and restarts, and will then tell me that update failed, and proceeds to undo changes. I have also manually downloaded the relavent msu file, with the same results.

I have also run the dism / sfc utilities.

Any ideas how to proceed from here?

Many thanks

Hi,

Hope all is well.

Wondering if anyone has come across this issue described above?

Many thanks

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Upload the setupapi.dev.log file
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\INF folder.
  • Right-click on the file setupapi.dev.log and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file setupapi.dev.zip in your next reply.

Hi Maxstar,

Many thanks for getting back to me.

Please see attached zip file as requested.

As a FYI, I re ran DISM with the /StartComponentCleanup switch and re ran component scanner again, and all the missing files and registry values disappeared as shown in the updated componentscanner.txt file. Thinking that this had resolved the issue, I ran the KB5053603 update again, but the issue still persists.

Hope you can shed some light on this.

Many thanks

Hi,

Export registry key as hive file.
  • Open the Start menu of Windows and type CMD.
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, select the option Run as administrator.
  • Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt and press enter.
Code:
reg save "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services" "%userprofile%\Desktop\Services.hiv"
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called Services.hiv.
  • ZIP this file and attach it to your next reply.

  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFixScript.txt and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFixScript.txt file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Afterwards attempt to update. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs and a new copy of the Setupapi.dev.log.

Hi Maxstar,

That fix resolved the issue.

Thanks you so much for your assistance.

Can you please shed some light on what happened?

Many thanks

You're welcome and glad to hear the issue has been resolved. In this case one of the services became corrupted so I've replaced that one with a known good copy.
