Started up my computer 2 days ago and noticed some features of windows were not working such as.
  1. Start menu showing no tiles or icons at all
  2. Search function on the PC either will not work, or returns a runtime error
  3. All the font looks strange/different than how it was the previous night
  4. System restore returns an error after restarting and fails
  5. Can not click the "Refresh PC" or "PC settings"

Those are just the issues I'm aware of. These are the things I have tried / errors I've gotten.
  1. Update Failed: Error 80010108
  2. Error: 0x800f0906
  3. Ran ever DISM command i could find online multiple times w/ and w/o a copy of Windows on a USB
  4. Tried to go back to a restore point multiple times
  5. Ran MBAM several times w/ full system scan
  6. Currently running full scans w/ Defender + Kaspersky
  7. Ran the SFCFix

I will attatch my CBS/SFCFix logs. Help would be much appreciated. Will donate $20 to the site if this can be fixed without having to reinstall windows because then I would need to buy a 1TB externa for $50l to back up my files since I have limited data and cant use cloud storage for 600GB of files.

Well done. Are there improvements on the issues you posted ?

Wish I could say that it did. Unfortunately still the same issues.
  1. Start menu is completely blank, Restore / Update
  2. "Change PC Settings" from the charms menu does nothing when clicked
  3. Ran the windows update tool
  4. Ran full scals with Malware Bytes, Kaspersky, and Defender.
I will attatch some screenshots

Check Windows Update again and report the result.
If it fails, attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

The windows update tool and the /restorehealth commands both say they completed but when i run the /scannow it still shows corruption

Step 1:
  • Right-click the Start button and click Commandprompt (Run as administrator).
  • A Window appears. Typ CHKDSK and press the enter key.
  • Wait until CHKDSK is finished.
  • Download ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude and save it on your desktop.
  • Rightclick
    58a60a47ed1bd-ListChkdskResult.PNG
ListChkdskResult.exe and click Run as administrator. On completion the tool will save a textfile called ListChkdskResult.txt on your desktop.
  • Attach this textfile to your next reply.

Step 2:
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
  2. Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  3. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  4. Press the Scan button.
  5. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  6. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

I had spent a few hours this afternoon uninstalling the updates for windows that installed the last few days and I just ran the /CheckHealth and /ScanHealth and its showing no corruption. My start menu is still empty and I'm unsure about the other features but I havent had time to restart my PC yet so I will restart it when I get home from work and then see where I stand with whats not working still and then continue on with your instructions

Also I just enabled the hidden Administrator account and logged into it and the start menu and windows functions are all fine. Still not on my account though. I've tried deleting the Start Menu folder as some others in a thread on microsoft have mentioned but no luck

A question before I provide a fix. Did you uninstall the following products ? :
- uTorrent
- PowerDVD / Cyberlink
- Kaspersky Antivirus

utorrent and kaspersky yes. Kaspersky is now uninstalled however as it was flagging Listchkdsk as a trojan and kept automatically removing it.

Powerdvd was installed on my computer from the manufacturer as far as i know. It's an Alienware X51 and I've had it since 2013 so I dont quite remember. It isnt something I use though. The disc drive auto-ejects now anyways for the past year but I almost never used it anyways

Step 1:
There are some active remnants of Kaspersky.
Download this Kaspersky Removal Tool: kavremvr.exe
Please follow the instructions at How to remove a Kaspersky Lab product using the kavremover tool.
Reboot the machine when done.

Step 2:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Here is the log. Everything is still the same as far as I can tell except utorrent was removed. It looks like t heres still some kaspersky remnants but since my search function is one of the features not working, I am unable to locate them. I ran the tool but not sure it got them all.

Create a new user account. Does the issues arise there also ?

I guess new user accounts have to be made from hte "PC settings" screen which I can not get to. I can only turn existing accounts on/off (Administrator, Guest) and the Search/Start Menu seems to fine on those 2 accounts, but they cant access "PC settings" either

Post the logfile C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log as attachment in your next reply.
Note: if the file is too big to upload to your next reply please upload via a service such as Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the download link.
