Constantly getting a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION (BSOD)

I have Windows 8 installed (consumer preview, version6.2 build 8250)

Every time I play a video in Windows Media Player, at some point the computer gets really slow, then gets stuck and then I get the BSOD (the WATCHDOF_VIOLATION issue).

Every time I play a video game (currently I play Future Soldier) the video driver crashes (and the game too).

This started hapenning just a couple of days ago, *I think* right after the recent update of Windows 8 (but I am not sure).

I followed the steps mentioned on sysnative.com (https://www.sysnative.com/forums/sh...SOD)-Posting-Instructions-Windows-7-amp-Vista) and attached the files to this thread.

Further info on my system:
OS: Windows 8 installed (consumer preview, version6.2 build 8250) - not dual boot
X86 64 bits
Original OS installed on the system was Windows 7 which I upgraded to Windows 8
Hardware is new (5- months)
Video Card: NVIDIA

Thank you in advance for looking at this.

Running the last 8 memory dumps......

Any particular reason why you haven't upgraded to the Release Preview? It's much more stable (and sometimes that's the only "fix") I would seriously consider a clean install of the Release Preview as it doesn't have the video issues that the Consumer Preview had.

There's a couple of hundred memory dumps (including 93 STOP 0x117's) in the WER section of MSINFO32. All but 2 refer to your nVidia drivers (the other 2 refer to your Intel Storage drivers).

Daemon Tools causes BSOD's in some Win7 installations - it's reasonable to suspect that it may be doing the same thing in Win8. Please do the following:
Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Win7 systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please uninstall the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): http://www.duplexsecure.com/faq#remove_32sptd

MSI Afterburner (along with Riva Tuner and EVGA Precision) also causes BSOD's in Win7 systems - so the same thing goes for Win8 systems as I stated above.
Please uninstall this program immediately!

It doesn't look like you're overclocking, but if you are please reset the system to stock (default) values while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume overclocking once we've made the system stable again.

Logitech drivers date from 2008 and must either be updated (2010 or later in most cases) or removed from the system for testing purposes. Feel free to reinstall the latest version once the system is stabilized

LogMeIn Remote drivers date from 2007 and must be uninstalled.

Your Intel Storage drivers date from 2010 and should be updated from http://downloadcenter.intel.com Look for the latest version of the Win8 compatible drivers for the Rapid Storage Technology (RST).

Ensure that you have the latest version of the Win8 drivers from http://www.nvidia.com

If the above steps don't stop the BSOD's, please zip up and upload any new memory dumps with your next post - and we'll see what we can figure out from there.

The following info is just FYI, I've already addressed the issues that I saw in the above paragraphs

- Further info on BSOD error messages available at: http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html
- Info on how to troubleshoot BSOD's (DRAFT): http://www.carrona.org/userbsod.html

Thank you for your prompt reply and action. I am pleasantly surprised.

I tried to follow your instructions, to some extent. I tried upgrading to the Release Preview, however it won't let me keep my old files and programs installations...therefore this is something that will have to wait. If you have an idea of how I can keep my files (mostly programs installed and desktop), then I will upgrade asap.

As for the remainder of your suggestions, I followed them.

I will keep you posted if the problem persists (or not).

Thanks again.

A couple of things:

1) You may continue to have problems just because you're using the Consumer Preview. That being said tho', there's no guarantee that you won't have issues with the Release Preview either (but it is less likely). The biggest issue we see with the Release Preview is that sometimes the system will freeze - either for a short while, or sometimes fully (requiring a reboot).

2) BSOD work on Win8 systems is in it's infancy - and there's just not that many of us who do it. So, we'll do our best - but we're still learning!

3) You've gotta backup your data - even if you don't upgrade to the Release Preview. So it's best to do it now and get it over with! Both the Consumer Preview and the Release Preview will expire in the near future and you'll be stuck without the use of the OS then.

4) I don't recommend upgrade installs - it carries over problems from the old installation into the new one. And, IME, these problems often become magnified in the new installation.

5) Because the previews will expire, you're going to have to reinstall your programs anyway. When I setup a new OS, I keep my essential program installers in a folder so that I can install them easily on the next version.

The great thing about Windows 8 (well, one of the few great things) is that Driver Verifier for it accomplishes a lot more checks than that for previous versions of Windows. You'll want to run Driver Verifier with all checks selected except the following: Force Pending I/O Requests, IRP Logging, and Low Resource Sim. Make sure to send us more crashdumps after the fact, and don't forget to restart Windows after you've set it all up!
