The G4x boards got a little funny many will not run a Pentium D or a Pentium 4 and some will so as long as you have a Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad it's not a problem but one of the others needs to be verified via the support list.

Moving too far from the original may give you issues with Windows Activation/WGA.

We are thinking of upgrading to Windows 8 when it comes out. What is the difference in the two chipsets?

The voltage regulation section will also be more robust more like the P45 setup on the G43. But no you won't be able to use the recovery disk, as the board unless a refurb replacement will not have the OEM bios and the network controller and sound will be different between manufacturers(Actually between Asus models those 2 can vary).

The memory is cheaper and he can sell the old sticks some place like craigslist.. Do a fresh install of Windows 7 using his existing product key and if it fails activation, activate over the phone.

Even upgrading to a 775 board with DDR3 the options are limited as to what is avaiable all are either G41 or some oddball Q45 business boards.
