I am working on a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit SP1.

I wanted to install IE 11 it gave me a message like IE 11 could not run on this version of the OS. I thought IE 11 ran on Windows 7 and confirmed it looking at my desktop.

I looked at the Windows Updates. The last time it was updated was Jun, 2016. So I thought I would try to get it caught up. I ran Checking for Updates overnight – about 8 hours. It was still running in the morning. I decided to cancel it. I rebooted and went into and it showed me one important update and seven optional updates were waiting to be installed. I tried to do them all but after running for about an hour the progress bar showed 0% completion on the first update, I decided to cancel it. I tried running just the important update and it completed successfully.

I restarted. I was going back for the optional updates. When I opened Windows Update it started to search for updates again. I left that run for a couple hours but canceled it to try other things.

I stopped AVG Antivirus and tried it. That kept checking for updates for too long. I closed it.

I did the following commands in command line:

At the command prompt, type the following, commands and then press ENTER after each command:
a. net stop wuauserv
b. net stop bits
c. net stop cryptsvc

Rename folders pertaining to Windows Update.
At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press Enter after each command:
a) ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old

b) ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

At the command prompt, type the following, commands and then press ENTER after each command:
a) net start wuauserv
b) net start bits
c) net start cryptsvc

That did not work either.

I ran the Trouble Shooter for Windows Update. It gave me the following results:
Windows Update error 0x80070057(2016-10-02-T-01_24_01P) Not fixed
Service Registration missing or corrupt Fixed
Problems installing recent updates Fixed
Problems installing recent updates Fixed

Can you give me some help?

Thanks
Don

I saw you wanted me to include the logs from SCFFix and CBS. I have put them here.

I got a message on SCFFix "The program can't start because MSVCP100.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. "

The program seemed to be running so I did not reinstall. Here is the log.

My CBS.zip is 51 meg so I put that in my Dropbox.

Hope this works

I saw that this Windows Update can run up to 20 hrs so I am going to start it and let it run for a while.

Here is an update.

I let Checking for updates run for over 52 hours. It finally returned with 40 important and 12 optional updates. I applied the 40 important and 11 of the 12 optional - I didn't bother with the Skype one. The installed correctly.

Is there anything I could check to make sure everything is okay on this PC?

I am going to start another check for updates to see how fast it comes back.

Thanks
Don

I finished doing several checks for updates and installed some more updates this morning. It seems to be working okay now. They came back in a reasonable time.

Do you have any idea why it stopped updating last June or why it took over 52 hours to get the updates this week? I did a speed test for this PC. It is wired. Download was 94Mbps and upload was 17Mbps.

Thanks
Don

The first check for updates after resetting the Windows Update Components takes a very long time, users everywhere are experiencing the same problem so I doubt it is anything specific to your computer or network.
As you found, after waiting for that first check subsequent checks are much faster.

I don't think I would have left it run that long had I not been waiting for a response. So this is one case where I am glad it took a while to get to me.

Let me point out too - I said "hanging" in the title of the case but the green bar under Checking for updates continued to move the whole time. So it was working - just for a long time.

Thanks for your help with this.

I don't see how to mark it solved. (I looked but don't see how to do it.)

I marked the thread solved.
