Hi Peter.... Good Morning.. Reporting back to you, my pc spent almost 3 hours doing a single update. Then it did another update later for a while. It "seems" that the Win update is working. It's now saying up to date but it seems as thou there would have been more updates as my Win 10 was a very old version to start? Computer is running very sluggish now with all the updates thou but the hardware is more then adequate to run Win 10. When Win 10 was initially updated, the Pc performance wise was running pretty much the same as when on Win 7. Made sure to check Services & start up programs, etc.. Concerned with the updates if there are any possible corrupted files, bad registry keys or possible missing updates. What should we run to confirm Pc is up to date & no corrupt files or registry problems? Clean up the HDD? Want to then make a "clean" image file & restore point so that it's a known good copy. I attached the two usual logs. Please let me know what else we should possibly check? This has been a process and there is no way I would have gotten this far without your assistance and technical expertise! A big Thank You as always.

Remove Avast to check if that slows the computer. Windows Defender will become your security program which should be fine.
Run the command winver and provide a screenshot of the window that appears.

The screenshot looks good.
What about Avast as I asked in my previous message ?

Hi Peter..How are you? I tried completely shutting off Avast and not allowing it to run at start up but that didn't do anything as far as the "sluggishness" that windows 10 has. Keep in mind when Win 10 was first installed it ran as quick as windows 7 did. It was only after we finally had all the updates installed that it has really slowed down. For instance, if I open a system app like Msconfig there is an actual delay before it opens, along with most other system things. It's just really laggy now, not sure why thou at all? Also, as a side, Is it prudent to run anything to see if there is any left over corrupt files from all the downloads, etc of updates we did? Just want the best possible version before I do a full system image backup & restore point. Thanks as always!

Most of the time that doesn't completely shut down the AV product. The best and only way is to re-enable all the disabled Avast items, reboot the machine and then uninstall Avast.
Does that make any difference?

Is it prudent to run anything to see if there is any left over corrupt files from all the downloads,
Run the command Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in an elevated commandprompt and report the result.
If it fails, copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Hi Peter.. Ran the dism & Cbs file attached. Saw this text repeated many time in the log, not sure if it matters/is important at all to the system,
" CBS InternalOpenPackage failed for Package_for_KB3025096~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.4.1.0 [HRESULT = 0x800f0805 - CBS_E_INVALID_PACKAGE]" etc....

There was also a , "CBS Repr: CSI meta data corruption found, will commit repair transaction if repair is asked."

Let me know if these are actual issues, I will try and uninstall avast tomorrow at some point to see if it improves anything w/ the sluggishness. Also when the Dism scan completed the system was basically crawling afterwards for a period of time, there were very long delays in opening things and chrome took forever to even open up and go to a webpage. Not sure if that data point shines a light on anything?
As always Thank you

KB3025096 is an old update (released in Dec 2014). This can be ignored.

There was also a , "CBS Repr: CSI meta data corruption found, will commit repair transaction if repair is asked."
We can ignore this one also. Just above this line we can read: "Corruption detection complete. numCorruptions = 0".

Hi Peter..... tried taking off avast and the system still behaved the same. I'm finding some strange things happening in general. 1) For no apparent reason my desktop icons every 4-7 days are re-arranging themselves which is very time consuming putting them back in correct order, I checked the usual settings and all is ok but no idea why this is happening? Don't think this happened once or twice in 10+ years on win 7. 2) Opening up system features such as "Personalize" or "File explorer", etc can take a very long time. For instance, I just opened Personalize and it took aprox 7-8 seconds to open which I have never seen on a Windows OS.. This is a constant since all the updates to windows 10, when we first installed it, it was quick to open any system file but not now, so I can't pin this one down at all. Do you have any ideas or possible solutions? Thank you

I also just saw this.. Even thou I never touched this setting.

Lets have a look with FRST.

FRST Scan:
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  2. Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  3. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  4. Press the Scan button.
  5. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  6. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Did the problem started after you installed "Microsoft Office Starter 2010" on this Windows 10 machine ?

Hi Peter, No never a problem with MS office starter 2010. Also, it was installed on Windows 7 years ago then re-installed back onto windows 7 last year. It along with the other programs were simply ported over by Windows 10 from exsiting programs that were on the Win 7 Os. No "NEW" programs have been installed on this image of Windows 10 except programs that you have asked me to use for problem finding. Thank you

Ok, all clear.

Step 1:
If you don't use these programs anymore, uninstall them. One at a time.
  • CyberLink MediaEspresso
  • CyberLink PowerDVD 10
  • MiniTool Partition Wizard Free 12.9
  • Nero BackItUp 10

Step 2:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

Hi Peter, I do use these programs on occasion. Can I keep them & do step 2? Wanted to make sure before I run the fixlist... Thanks!

Can I keep them & do step 2?
Yes, you can keep them. They appear in the Tasks list, that is why I asked.
Perform Step 2, the fix does nothing related to the programs mentioned in Step 1.

Any improvement after this fix ?
