Let me start by saying any help is so greatly appreciated and I thank you ahead of time. I've tried all I know and Windows 7 to 10 just will not go past 48% when trying to upgrade. It always gives a "0xC1900101 - 0X30018, FIRST_BOOT SYSPREP_SPECIALIZE" error. I Ran the Sfc scan, Component Scanner and Sfcfix. I've spent hours but nothing allowed windows 10 to install. I also can't pull anything up on Windows features as the box comes up but stays blank which is probably a part of the problem. I will do my absolute best to provide any info/logs here, please bare with me as some of it may be above my PC pay grade.. Many thanks for the help!!

Hi @Michael0000,

Welcome to Sysnative Forums!

If you haven't already, please review the posting instructions here, and attach the requested log files. Without log files, our helpers will not be able to assist, and this will slow down fixing your machine.

If logs have been already been provided, our team of volunteers will analyse the provided log files to build a fix for your system. Please be aware that this may take several days from your initial post, due to the high volume of threads that we receive.

- Sysnative Windows Update Team

Hello and welcome,

It looks like this machine hasn't been updated for a long time.
Follow the instructions below please.

Step 1:
WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.
    1p8eDnI.gif
  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Attach that file to your next reply.

Step 2:
Is Avast still installed ? If so, which version ?

Step 3:
Provide the Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Gofile or WeTransfer and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Gofile or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

Hi Peter, thank you for the help thus far, so much appreciated. The avast has not been updated for aprox 2-3 months now as it stopped updating and had errors in trying to do so along with windows update not being able to finish most downloads as well. I also noticed that the snipping tool also stopped opening at aprox the same time as well with an error box. The Avast version is Avast 24.12.9725a (build 24.12.9725.913) , 250119-4 , 1.0.826. I have attached The logs you requested, I was not able to zip the components file as it gave me access denied even thou It looks like I have the permissions & ownership of the file under settings. I was able to upload it (I hope this is the right file)... I also tried reg bank as well and it only had 5 folders however components was not listed. Again, many many thanks as this has driven me crazy...
Edit.. I believe the zip file worked now..

Great, the SFCFix log looks good and the attached COMPONENTS hive is helpful.

Step 1:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  2. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  3. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  4. Press the Fix button.
  5. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  6. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  7. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  8. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

Step 2:
Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to your next reply.

  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).
  • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.

  4. Right-click on it and select Permissions...
  5. Click Add.
  6. Type Everyone in the text box.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Everyone should now be listed in the box "Group or user names:".
  9. Single click on Everyone and then tick the "Full Control" box in the column "Allow".

Let me know the result.

Ok.
Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to your next reply.

Great. The log is clean.

Restart the machine.
Run the command sfc /scannow in an elevated commandprompt and report the result.
If it fails, copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Hi.. It ran, attached is the log just in case there is something in there. I am not sure if avast is just bad,etc as it still will not update/do a repair or system issue. Perhaps, may not matter as goal is to update system to windows 10?

Thank you again Peter!!

This SFC scan was just a check to see if there were other issues after the clean log by CheckSUR.

Restart the machine.
Check Windows Update and report the result. Do not install any updates yet.
Provide a screenshot of the important updates first.

Hello Peter...
Here are the updates available, both Important & others. Thank you once again for all you help!

Check again and report the result.

The avast has not been updated for aprox 2-3 months now as it stopped updating and had errors in trying to do so
Check again and report the result.

Hi Peter..... Windows features is now working!! Avast still will not update & snipping tool still will not work. All of these seemed to have stopped working around the same time or it maybe just a coincidence, not sure. Also, get an error message when I attempt to "repair" avast. Do you want me to do anything further with the windows update files?
Thank you!
