"Addresses an issue in the servicing stack when you install an update that has been signed by using only the SHA-2 hash algorithm". KB4454419 "SHA-2 code signing support update" is also required, but that one was already installed. I installed the other (successfully)... and then tried Windows Update again. And that now worked. All updates installed successfully. I'm currently in the progress of a reboot where it's completing the installed updates.

I really hope that wasn't the issue from the start. :-( Though I'm sure I would have googled that error way back when. So it may have only gotten a little further after all the fixes I've done from here. Next step... W10 upgrade.
