Can't install any Windows Updates, nor Windows 10 upgrade

This Windows 7 system works fine except that I am unable to install any Windows Updates, nor do a Windows 10 upgrade. I was able to install Office updates thru Windows Update tool however. At some point in the past, I discovered a bad sector or such that was affecting files that seemed related. Unfortunately, that was some time ago, and I've forgotten the details of that. I attempted to resolve this by cloning the HD to a new one... and although the drive shows no errors, this issue related to Windows updates did not get resolved. I've tried all sorts of solutions I found online, but nothing resolved yet. Discovered SURT and then SFCFix tonight... and below are my results... though I'm not sure what's up with the ZIP errors. Provide the Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Filedropper or SendSpace and just provide the link here.


Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
    You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

The virus complaint for FRST didn't appear to happen until it had completed, it said it was successful then when it went to save the log or delete the fixlist virus program said it blocked it accessing the file. After that, to be sure, I ran it again. That 2nd run log is attached.

Same. Correct. It hasn't changed. Ahhh I see the timestamp in the file didn't change. But, the timestamp of the file did. I'll rename it and try again.

I downloaded KB3004394 before trying here (Windows6.1-KB3004394-v2-x64.msu), but when I tried to install it it indicated that it was not applicable.
 
Don't do any other steps or install any update. I'd like to see the confirmation that the avast issues are fixed.
Restart the computer.
Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to your next reply.
 
I have Avast disabled. I renamed the CheckSUR.log and started SURT again, and it recreated the file. Just waiting for it to finish now.

The KB I tried was before I came here. I've just been following the steps indicated here.
 
You may have already determined this... but I did a little research on KB3004394, which I'm sure I did way back when, and after reading again about it causing havoc, I recall this, and it appears that I uninstalled that as it's not listed in "Installed Updates". Though I see reports that later Microsoft cautioned against removing it after having said to do so. I also found KB3024777 files in downlaods on that computer, so it appears I attempted to resolve it with the fix they later released. Though no signs of it having installed or done anything.
 
The KB3004394 files in the CheckSur log are related to an old update which is no longer provided by Microsoft.
Please leave that for now and do following only.
