Hello all,

I have an interesting issue which I hope I can get help with.

I'm running Windows 10 1909 Build 18363.535.

When my network profile is set to 'Private' I am unable to access the web interface of any of my local devices such as my router or NAS but I can ping them and access file shares. Public websites such as Google load without any issues. It only affects local devices.

What's interesting is if I change my network profile to 'Public' then all the issues are resolved. I can get access to all local devices and public websites. This puzzles me as 'Public' should be more restrictive than 'Private'.

I've tried various netsh and winsock reset commands and performed network and firewall resets.

The issue remains even if I turn off the firewall.

When switching from Private to Public, something else must be happening besides changing firewall rules. I'm leaning towards a routing issue where local requests are being sent to the wrong gateway or interface.

I'd appreciate any help you can give.

Many thanks
Boyd

Hello there. I was using Kaspersky but uninstalled it along with Express VPN. I'm now running Windows Defender Anti-Virus and Firewall. I've tried with these disabled too and issue remains. Thanks

Edit time limit ran out... sorry for double post.
I completely understand you looking for help and wanting to get it as quickly as possible but please stick to one forum as it can sometimes cause confusion in what you have been advised to do between what advice you've implemented at each place.

Cannot access the web interface of local devices - Networking

Have you rebooted your router?

Apologies. I rarely ask questions in forums and was not sure which one was best. Your point has been noted.
I uninstalled Kaspersky normally and not using their special uninstall tool. I will test this. I will point out that I had these issues prior to ever installing Kaspersky.

Good morning! No apologies necessary. Thanks for letting me know about the prior issues before Kaspersky. I'll do some more research and get back with you or someone else might chime in. Thanks for your patience.

Let me know how the test came out. Also, reboot your router if you haven't already. Thanks.

Open an elevated command prompt - Hit start, type cmd, then Ctrl + Shift + Enter, this should open and elevated command prompt. Type in SFC /Scannow hit enter and let it finish. Let me know the outcome.

Also, run this from an elevated command prompt.

Click start, type cmd, then CTRL+ SHIFT+ ENTER. An elevated command window will open. Paste the results in your next post.

ipconfig/all > 0 & notepad 0

Thanks to jenae for the above code.

Thank you 'xrobwx71' for responding.

It ended up being an issue with the Microsoft 365 service account that I use. They have something called 'Windows Information Protection (WIP)'. Unless specifically specified, when in private mode you are restricted to what local devices you can access unless you explicitly add it to your trusted/allowed list.

Information about it can be found here:

Windows Information Protection (WIP) app protection policy - Microsoft Intune

Once I removed my computer from Azure AD, I was able to access the websites of local devices on my network. (I did this through Settings – Accounts – Access work or school and removed the account which was listed.

I will add it back once I’ve learnt more about WIP. I’m surprised this issue hasn’t affected more people using Microsoft 365. At the very least, the policy should be set to allow access to local devices otherwise you’re locked out and need alternative means to access your resources.

Hope this helps someone and I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to me.

Kind regards

Boyd
