BSODs, crashes, and hangs after clean install on new laptop - Windows 10 x64

So I got a new laptop - MSI Dominator Pro GT72. I added two 8GB sticks of RAM on top of the current 16GB currently in it. It also had two Kingston m.2 SSDs in RAID 0. It was running with out any problems what so ever. I decided after that I actually wanted the ssds as two independent drives. So I removed the RAID setup and did a clean install of Windows 10 back on. That seemed to install all ok.

Then In the process of installing the drivers from the provided MSI disc it hung and then restarted. Then ever time after on login it froze a few seconds in. I thought I'd try a clean install again on the other SSD this time just to see if it reoccurred. Sure did. After installing some of the drivers and using the machine it crashed again and froze on login. I even tried all the updated drivers from the msi website instead of the ones on the disc.

I've run a memtest and absolutely no errors. I've updated the bios and firmware also. I then began running verifier to see if I could find a culprit. I got a BSOD before login repeatedly. I then got down to only selecting a bare few drivers in the test and was able to login with no BSOD. When I ran verifier with combinations of drivers they worked sometimes and only really seemed to crash when i stacked more and more drivers for it to test. I'm not sure if its suppose to work that way or not.

I thought it might have something to do with me separating the m.2 ssds from the RAID. But I have no clue how or why. I should mention that there is a 1TB hdd also in the machine. Any assistance would be very much appreciated at this point.

Re: BSODs, crashes, and hangs after clean install on new laptop

Hi. . .

Driver Verifier checks 3rd party (non-Microsoft) drivers for certain violations. If D/V finds a violation, it flags the driver and disables it, then forces a BSOD. If it occurred immediately following boot-up, it simply means that D/V has flagged a boot driver.

Driver Verifier flagged 3 different drivers in your 8 BSODs -

Code:
bwcW10x64.sys Mon Sep 28 11:46:01 2015 (560960B9)
Driver Reference Table - bwcw10x64.sys

Code:
nvhda64v.sys Mon Sep 21 05:44:17 2015 (55FFD171)
Driver Reference Table - nvhda64v.sys

Code:
RtsPer.sys Wed May 06 03:22:09 2015 (5549C121)
Driver Reference Table - RtsPer.sys

Update those drivers. Go to the sites found at the links or your system manufacturer's support site.

One thing that does bother me a little - 3 of the 8 dumps did not mention a driver, yet the dumps were VERIFIER_ENABLED. Usually, this means unknown hardware failure is at fault.

For now - update the 3 drivers and see if the BSODs continue.

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

p.s. Just curious - what does one do with 32 GB of RAM?

Re: BSODs, crashes, and hangs after clean install on new laptop

Thanks. Ha I thought someone might ask that. I need it for my animation and rendering. Other than that, yes, its so overkill.

Well I tried updating all those drivers. I ran verifier and it crashed again on startup. I checked the dump file and its was flagged as the RtsPer driver again.

I wonder is there an underlying hardware issue thats crashing all the drivers? But why only affect it after I clean install on the newly rescued ssds.

Unknown hardware failure is a definite cause.

Be sure you have the latest firmware upgrades from the SSD manufacturer's support sites for the SSDs.

Check for BIOS update.

It is quite unusual to see D/V flag 3 different drivers in <24 hour period.

Your mixed RAM is a big red flag to me. Looking at the RAM info, you have two Samsung modules, and two Kingston modules. They're probably both totally fine on their own, and MemTest likely won't find any issues, but generally you need to be very careful about pairing RAM. Even though they're both the same speed, I'd still say they're likely to cause you grief. Try removing the two sticks you added, I assume they're the Kingston modules, and run your system on 16GB for now, then let us know if the crashing persists. I know you said it was working originally with the two of them in there, but I'd prefer to eliminate that as a possibility.

I just tried it again with only the original 16gb ram in - no luck. I also made sure that the ssd firmware was up to date. I'm going to return the machine to its original ssd RAID setup. And clean install again and see if thats going to do anything. I can't see why that would make a difference but at least it will close to how I originally got it.

So... the system BSOD'd with the 16 GB RAM installed?

If so, please get the dump; zip it & attach it.

Thanks.

EDIT: The RAID should have no bearing on the BSODs.

The dump was VERIFIER_ENABLED and named our old friend -
Code:
RtsPer.sys Fri May 29 02:32:34 2015 (55680802)

The last RtsPer.sys had a timestamp = 6 May 2015.

Driver Verifier did flag the driver.

Can you uninstall whatever app it belongs to?

So I uninstalled the realtek pci-e card reader but that stilled BSODd in verifier test. And then I disabled the driver completely which also still crashed after running verifier. I have a question about verifier - Whats the difference between running the standard settings from running the custom one with only specific selected test types?

Hi mathsu,

I had a short look at the dumps and noticed there is 1 driver that is a little outdated, but I'm not sure where this driver is from.

The specific tests are ones that we feel will best suit the majority of OPs.

Your latest 2 dumps were VERIFIER_ENABLED, but named no 3rd party driver.

When this occurs, unknown hardware failure is the likely cause.

It could be any piece of hardware that has failed. The dumps are incapable of telling us which part(s) have failed.

Run memtest86+ - one stick at a time; alternate the slots - https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/3909-test-ram-memtest86.html

Check for a BIOS update at your system manufacturer's support site.

If you have an SSD, check for firmware upgrades.

Ok so I made sure my BIOS was up to date and all the settings were correct and then started on a clean install. Near the end of installing the drivers, again it froze and restarted and continued to freeze and restart when arriving at the login. I managed to gets some dump files from that. Then I decided to give the RAID another chance. Setup and clean installed with all the updated drivers and that seemed to be okay. No crashes yet! However - i ran driver veriifer which crashed it. I have run the standard test in verifier and that has actually behaved and not BSODed the machine. But the custom test always crashes. Is there sepcific checked tests I shouldn't be running for that not to happen?

Is there a dump from the Driver Verifier crash?

Was there a driver name listed on the screen?

If Driver Verifier is causing the system to BSOD immediately upon restart, D/V has likely flagged a boot driver.

There is nothing of value in the 3 dumps you attached.
