Hi -

It's possible that a driver from/related to the USB modem or USB stick remains loaded after the device is disconnected is the cause.

Also, a driver belonging to a device that may not be thought of as USB may be at fault, e.g., the internal webcam that came with my laptop is actually a USB device

Daemon can cause strange things to happen and go undetected because its drivers are loaded very early in the boot sequence.

If the BSODs are driver related, i.e., not hardware failure, Driver Verifier should help here by flagging the driver and forcing a BSOD.

Some help with translation, please...

1. Is this related to the UAC - User Access Control?

If #3 translation is correct, is audio completely disabled?

Thank you.

1. Yes. It indicates that User Access Control is turned off. Should I turn it on?
2. Yes. It reports that doesn't detect antivirus programs. Anyway I use AVAST! Free Antivirus program and it works.
3. Yes, the translation is correct. That is a surprise for me because I do not experience any problems with sound, I can watch movies, listen to the music and use web cam microphone in the programs like Skype.

I'm sorry for my Russian Windows, I didn't expect that these reports would be in Russian.

Hi -

No worries about Russian Windows as we have an expert translator among us - YOU! smile.gif

1. UAC is fine - OFF. I was just double-checking translation. Most here have UAC off.

2. I did see Avast drivers in the dump files. PERFMON reporting of this is a bug. You can apply the fix if you wish, but is not necessary -

Is the mic built-in?

Regards. . .

Yes, the microphone is biult-in inside the web cam, but also it's possible to use outside microphone, sometimes I use it as well. Everything is fine with sound.

I have run Driver Verifier using all instructions. Yes, it resulted in bsod, I have started in a safe mode and restored the system. But it's very strange - today I had bsod 1 time before running of verifier (as usual) and 2 times after (after first re-boot and after second - i tried to reboot in normal mode 2 times), but in c:\windows\minidump i see only 1 dump file (according to time - from the first bsod). I attach it.

Hi -

Bugcheck = 0x124 = Machine check exception (actually called WHEA)

System uptime (before BSOD) = 0 days 13:02:32.365 - 13 hrs.

BSOD for this dump occurred - Mon Oct 29 03:39:41.028 2012 (GMT-4)

That is my local time - US East Coast Daylight Savings Time -- it is 8:03 am here now.

My post #2 was just under 5 hours ago, so that dump is before Driver Verifier, which is the obvious reason the dump is not VERIFIER_ENABLED.

The WHEA record shows L2 processor cache error -

0x124 almost always indicates hardware failure.

How old is the system?

Have you had trouble before the BSODs started on August 16?

I have run Driver Verifier using all instructions. Yes, it resulted in bsod, I have started in a safe mode and restored the system. But it's very strange - today I had bsod 1 time before running of verifier (as usual) and 2 times after (after first re-boot and after second - i tried to reboot in normal mode 2 times), but in c:\windows\minidump i see only 1 dump file (according to time - from the first bsod). I attach it.

No dump file creation given that scenario is plausible. Windows shut down so fast to save itself, it didn't have time to create a kernel dump file. Or -- there may have been one, but System Restore wiped it out.

Driver Verifier resulting in a BSOD immediately after boot-up could mean that a boot driver is at fault.

Please run SysInternals LoadOrd and save as a text file; attach to next post - http://live.sysinternals.com/LoadOrd.exe

Any over-clocking?

Are temps OK?

Any hardware additions? Replacements?

The system is app. 15 months old, actually I thought already about usb chipset failure, but I don't know how to check it.

Before August 16 I didn't have BSODs.

No, you detected the time correctly, exactly at this time I had BSOD today, but it defenately was BEFORE I started Verifier. When I started it I had BSOD after re-boot (actually re-boot was practically finished, already I could see all shortcuts on the desktop when BSOD occured). I'm in GMT+2.00 time zone (Turkey).

Are temps OK?

Sorry I don't know what is this and how to check it. Do you mean temp folders? How to check are they ok or not?

Any hardware additions? Replacements?

This laptop had 2 replacements. Last december I had to change input for headphones after it was physically damaged (fell down together with headphones inside), but I do not think it can be connected, because it was long time before. The second one: approximately in September the battery died completely - first it stoped to charge fully and then laptop could work only with electric cable (without battery at all). I have changed tha battery and now it's fine.

Now I tried one more time to run Driver Verifier, again it caused BSOD, again there is no appropriate dump file, but I took a photo of BSOD:

Hi -

The saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" sure applies here today. I truly hope the fix is as easy as it seems at the moment.

The VERIFIER_ENABLED BSOD screenshot clearly shows Avast driver aswsp.sys - https://www.sysnative.com/drivers/driver.php?id=aswSP.SYS

Bugcheck = 0xc4 (0xf6,,,) = Driver Verifier flagged a driver that referenced user mode handle as kernel mode

aswsp.sys = Avast - timestamp = 0x50866d0e = Tue Oct 23 10:10:22 2012

That version was obviously just released last month.

Remove Avast with the removal tool - http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN146

Download to your Desktop. Close all windows; RIGHT-click on the EXE, select "Run as Administrator". Reboot upon completion.

Thank you for the LoadOrd output. This entry caught my eye immediately:
Code:
Automatic	n/a*	n/a*	Amsp	[COLOR="#FF0000"]Trend Micro[/COLOR] Solution Platform

Remove Trend Micro as well with a removal tool (if available) or whatever instructions per Trend Micro. If none, remove via Control Panel program uninstall. Reboot upon completion. Be sure to uninstall Avast & Trend Micro separately, i.e., reboot in-between removals.

Install MSE - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/security-essentials-download

Hope that you're okay at the Eastern Coast.

Sandy go away :r1:

Thank you for asking. New Jersey got hit very hard. Several 100,000s have been without electricity or running water since Monday and not expected to be fixed until early next week. Hundreds, if not thousands, lost their homes or have major damage.

All here are safe and sound - which is what really counts. The kids love it - no school for another week. I'm not quite share their enthusiasm at my age! :0

I do hope the removals fix this for you. The odds of a 0x124 BSOD being software related are low.

I appreciate you running the various requested apps - it makes everything that much easier on both sides of the fence. You may be surprised to learn the number that don't cooperate.

Regards. . .
