Good day to everyone. I came across the thread about imallcs's components hive being repaired.

I have a dell Precision M6700 laptop
win10 ver 10.0.19041.3803 (has rejected recent updates)
cannot be updated to win11

It has BSOD
I'm attempting to repair using cmd from usb install disk
rebuilt boot dir per CyberCPUTech's instructions on youtube.
but when I try to run any DISM restore health command: dism /image:c: /cleanup-image /restorehealth I get Error: 23 Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
the log file (attached) shows failed to load COMPONENTS hive with errors all related to that. Also a bunch of Warnings prior in the log related to failed to load the provider located at X:\Sources\ . . .

when I run:
dism /image:c: /cleanup-image /checkhealth
I get:
The component store cannot be repaired.
The operation completed successfully.

sfc /scannow returns: Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation

I would rather not reinstall the os from scratch because I have many production programs installed already and one fairly critical program on there that the provider sees as tied to the machine for a lifetime purchase and not to myself and I fear they will not assist me in installing again on a fresh rebuild, forcing a subscription method. (TMI likely - apologies . . .)

Seems to be some issue with the COMPONENTS hive and I was wondering if the SFCFix.exe might help or if the components hive available for down may be an option.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Awesome, in-depth forum from what I can see!
Cheers!

I just found the instructions page. I do apologize for the pre-emptive post. I will run through the steps on the instructions page in the next few days and post again here. Thank you in advance for a great web forum to help with windows bsod. Cheers!

Thank you again for this forum.
Looking at Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions - Windows 11, 10, 8(.1), 7 and Vista, it seems that windows needs to be running . . . but I cannot boot, goes immediately to BSOD & cannot start.
I did check steps 1 & 2 running regedit in cmd from my Win10 22h2 USB install drive.
step 1: write event to system log: data set to 1 already
step 2: CrashDumpEnabled DWORD value was set to 7 by default
step 3: I extracted Sysnative BSOD Collection Application to a folder on another jump drive and attempted to run the exe file in cmd from the Win10 22h2 USB install drive. It would not run: cmd line error: 'SysnativeFileCollectionApp.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
step 4: Post on thread . . . here is the post:
step 5:
A brief description of your problem (but you can also include the steps you tried)
System Manufacturer? Dell
Laptop or Desktop? Laptop
Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) M6700
OS ? (Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista) Win 10
x86 (32bit) or x64 (64bit)? 64 Bit
(Only for Vista, Windows 7) Service pack?
What was original installed OS on system? Win 7 Pro
Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? OEM
Age of system? (hardware) ~12 yrs
Age of OS installation? ~5 yrs
Have you re-installed the OS? Not since 2020
CPU Intel Core i7-3940XM CPU @ 3.00GHz 3.20 GHz
RAM (brand, EXACT model, what slots are you using?) Crucial 2x8gb DDR3L 1600
Video Card Nvidia Quadro K5000M 4GB
MotherBoard - (if NOT a laptop)
Power Supply - brand & wattage (if laptop, skip this one) Laptop
Is driver verifier enabled or disabled? Not sure, pretty sure enabled
What security software are you using? (Firewall, antivirus, antimalware, antispyware, and so forth) Vipre Advanced Security
Are you using proxy, vpn, ipfilters or similar software? No
Are you using Disk Image tools? (like daemon tools, alcohol 52% or 120%, virtual CloneDrive, roxio software) No
Are you currently under/overclocking? Are there overclocking software installed on your system? Nothing other than what came on the factory Dell Precision.

Step 6: I downloaded Sysnative Speccy x64 portable 1.32.740 & extracted to a folder on the second jump drive but did not attempt to run because I could not get step 3 to work.

Attached are screen shots of what happens when I try to boot normally, shot1 is on first try, shot2 is second, shot3 is 3rd try, a loop.
Recovery wouldn't work, then I rebuilt the boot partition. Still same screens as attached screen shots.
Any suggestions? or is this windows installation toast you think?

Thread moved to hardware, because this is not a problem with Windows Update! And this system does not meet the hardware requirements to run Windows 11!

This problem seems to be an hardware-related issue with a failing hard disk.

Rich (BB code):
2025-07-02 09:35:43, Error CBS Failed to load offline store from boot directory: '\\?\C:\' and windows directory: '\\?\C:\Windows\' [HRESULT = 0x80070017 - ERROR_CRC]
2025-07-02 09:35:43, Error CBS Failed to initialize store parameters with boot drive: C:\, windows directory C:\Windows, and external directory: [HRESULT = 0x80070017 - ERROR_CRC]
2025-07-02 09:35:43, Error CBS Cannot finalize a session that has not been initialized. [HRESULT = 0x80070017 - ERROR_CRC]
2025-07-02 09:35:43, Info CBS Session: 684_5416921 finalized. Reboot required: no [HRESULT = 0x80070017 - ERROR_CRC]

Are you able take out the HDD from this laptop to check on another machine (with docking station)? E.g. with the following tools.

Download
520c07ffc7e11-CrystalDiskInfo-Canned.png
Crystal DiskInfo and save it to your Desktop.
  • Run the installer to install the program.
  • When finished, open the installed program by double clicking on it.
    • Good - There are no problems found, the drive is working properly.
    • Caution - The drive have some problems. (which indicates a drive that you should most likely be thinking about backing up and replacing.)
    • Bad - This usually indicates a drive that’s dead or near death. (! - Back up all important data as soon as possible.)
  • Resize the window so that all information is visible.
  • Take a screenshot of what you see and post it in your next reply.

Download
621b954633e7e-gsmartcontrol.png
GSmartControl (portable) to your desktop.
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-2.x.x-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

  • Otherwise: > double-click on the (problematic) drive you want to test.
  • Open the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete).
  • Open the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;

Awesome! I am on the machine in question. I installed win10Pro on another 1TB SSD in here, seems to be running ok. I did get a "invalid partition" screen a couple of times. seems it's maybe about bios . . . I'll check to see if it will update.
meantime here's a screenshot of the Crystal DiskInfo run on the HDD in question . . . results Caution. plus when copying some of the files off of it (I have it plugged in through a usb3.0 inatek external case) the file copy stalled many times and could not read a number of files . . .
screenshot attched:

in GSmartControl (portable) the test returned failed, so I tried it again a few times but failed each time. the attributes tab screenshot is attached and all reads "old age" ! many hours on that drive. good thing it was a back-up system. I believe I'll keep a system restore for my current main machine so I don't run into the "perpetual" software argument. But it seems your diagnosis was correct? the drive is it at its life's end . . .

Thank you Maxstar for your assistance! Cheers!

You're welcome. And when this HDD still contains important data you could try to run CHKDSK, to see if it will fix some 'read errors' but you must also consider some kind of data loss on bad drives.

Yes, I ran ChkDsk prior to rebuilding the boot volume, and I believe after, but it found no errors. I just ran it again & it found no errors. That's why I did not suspect the HDD. It's still a little bit of a mystery why it would not find any bad sectors or anything. See screenshot of chkdsk (ran again just now) results attached. ??

Please run the following tool.

Download
6198cd309385f-58a60a47ed1bd-ListChkdskResult.PNG
ListChkdskResult.exe and save it on your desktop.
  • Rightclick ListChkdskResult.exe and select Run as administrator.
  • Notepad will open the file ListChkdskResult.txt on completion. (This logfile ListChkdskResult.txt is also saved on your desktop.)
  • Post the logfile ListChkdskResult.txt as attachment in your next reply.

It seems drive F: is the bad one, so you can run the following command as well to check that drive. This will trigger a reboot to perform the repairs if possible .

Code:
chkdsk F: /r

Thanks again Maxstar. It looks like this drive is toast . . . no saving it I'm assuming. Attached is the cmd screen copied to a txt file. I don't know where to find the log file, so maybe this will work to know definitively that I should just trash the disk? Format it? Or any possible chance of recovering the OS on it?
