There are (at least) 7 layers of stuff in the networking "stack" - so it's not just the drivers.
Also, there's an increased amount of activity in apps that are "internet aware" - so they demand more of the drivers.
Then you try to cram it all over wifi (which is generally pretty slow) and you have people clicking their fingers off trying to speed up the apps - which (IMO) can cause further problems.
Finally, Atheros says that you can get the drivers from the OEM - but many of the OEM's don't update them on their website, so it's difficult to find them.
