Okay, so I seen news about IOS 7 today... What the heck is up with that? It looks like they copied the simplistic look that Microsoft adopted for Windows 8...

Apple copying Microsoft now?

There was actually an imgur link that I don't have at the moment that showed IOS7 and WP8 side by side, and they looked quite identical. I'm glad to see Apple move to a better design model, but it is quite a copy job of Windows Phone it looks like.

There's no doubt this is a copied style. Apple had their own design for years, and not long after the release of Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, and the Surface that show Microsoft's new style, they come out with something like that?

...and it'll be revolutionary, magical, fantastic, etc. And probably described by the same folks that derided it when Microsoft did it, but in other news the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

Not by me, I'll admit, Microsoft did it better. Apple failed terribly at trying to create this look... I would like to hear how many people complain about it vs. how many people like it, and how many of these people complained when Microsoft did this though. That would be very interesting. I think it's the true test to see how many of those people complained about Windows 8's look, just because they don't like Microsoft lol.

I know people on both sides. Those that love Microsoft and hate Apple, and those that love Apple and hate Microsoft.

OS religion is stupid, but it is practiced by many, and openly. Obviously I have a pony in the race as my employer, but even as a normal person speaking my mind, this is definitely (*definitely*) imitation of Windows Phone and, to a lesser extent, the Palm Pre and some Android skins. There's some interesting tidbits and takes on things to be sure, but it can easily be postured that Apple sees the minimalist, "tile" look to be a better way to go with their mobile OS (and perhaps their desktop variant - it'll be interesting to see what happens when that gets rev'ed next).

Never having used a Smartphone (yet), after viewing the YouTube that Richard linked and reading Meet the latest Windows Phone incarnation, iOS 7 | Windows Phone Central, I see the strong similarity. However, I also see how much better the Windows Phone looks than iOS 7 and am looking forward to receiving the HTC 8x being sent from Microsoft SaferOnline:

I was talking with my MVP lead, because he had brought a Windows Phone to a meeting I had with him and some other MVP's. He was pretty open to some questions I asked about it, and the main thing was the apps. Otherwise, the way he described it to me, it made perfect sense. There are things about the iPhone that are better, and majorly, just the number of apps available, but there is quite a bit more features in my opinion on the Windows Phone which make it better, outside of just the apps and settings. I wish the durability of the Windows Phone gets up to par with the iPhone though... That would be my only stopper for getting one right away. The iPhone 5 is actually very very tough because of it's design.

I still have an old iPhone 3G though because it was given to me, I've been holding off on getting a new phone because I really don't care to be up with technology in the cellphones side of things unless there's something that hinders me against the newer products. (I know how it is (in terms of marketing), and especially for Apple's iPhone's...)

I think it's being seen by many though, not just myself, that this is a copy. I would like to know Why though. What in the world are they doing? Not that it's bad to change, but they had their own style, and changed over to a Modern Design look, and they are without a doubt going to get criticized for that. Is Apple feeling that Microsoft is going to be a threat? Apple has the iPad, and the iPhone. Microsoft is doing the right thing in my opinion and taking it further with what all you can do with these technologies, and my only guess would be that Apple see's them as a threat for innovative ideas they've been able to come up with, in the world Apple currently dominates.

lol! Why try to match Microsoft's style though. I tried to think hard about this one, but it was the only logical reason I could come up with.

This age in technology is looking to be the turning point for whatever the future will look like. I'm seeing change everywhere, and once the course is set, I am curious to see where the trend will take us.

@Corrine - Let us know how you like it. :) I'm getting ideas for a new phone currently. I don't know when I will build up the courage to get one, but ideas are always nice.

I'd wager that the Lumia line from Nokia is very durable (just google it) - getting phones from Samsung usually is a safe bet too, although getting their flagship WP in the US is pretty difficult. HTC's phones are hit and miss, but the Lumia line compared to say an iPhone 4S or 5 without a case is not really a competition. The Lumia will win (and keep working, and working) hands down while under decent stress a naked iPhone 4+ will break.

The big complaint is the apps, although most apps are on the WP at this point - some people play lots of games, and the iPhone generally has more "big name" games until recently (see Halo on the WP). It also comes down to what you think is important - the Windows Phone is a tighter, more integrated (and from listening to those who use it, easier) experience to have, whereas the iPhone is more fragmented, but with more app options (more != better, but more is usually seen as == better). I don't knock anyone for using an iPhone, and the iOS7 updates are pretty nice in all honesty. The problem will be how the tech press will undoubtably praise the iOS7 upgrade as beautiful, revolutionary, fantastic, <insert positive description here> while glossing over the fact that these same things in other OSes were downplayed and sometimes ridiculed, mostly because they came from Microsoft or Palm. It is what it is, that's the only point I intended to make with my comment.

I am always glad to hear people are interested, and for those that travel outside the US (especially to Europe and Asia), WP does quite a bit better there than it does in the US - Microsoft is apparently trying to figure out all the things that make that work, too.

Yeah I keep hearing about this Galaxy S3 thing too. I seen a video on YouTube though where an iPhone held up to many smashes on the ground without a case. It was actually impressive... And hardly any screen scratches either. The other test they did was with a Samsung Galaxy S3 and it seemed to be fairly strong as well.

and the iOS7 updates are pretty nice in all honesty

I can't upgrade to anything past 5 I think on my old 3G, but on my iTouch IOS 6 came with a really nice reminders app that would be nice to have on my iPhone, but unfortunately... :noidea: I keep getting calls from my provider asking me if I would like to take their deal on upgrading to an iPhone 5, and it got annoying. So this last time I told the lady that if she kept bothering me about it, that I would not be getting any more phone plans through them and moving to someone else. Deals might sound great, but I know for a fact that this cost is paid for somewhere else along the line, all they do is re-arrange where that total is distributed for the most part.

WP looked nice though, plus my main point to my MVP lead was that if I could get one, I could not only be developing for my Surface, and desktop, but also Windows Phone. I was offered to help develop apps for mobile devices for Android, IPhone/Apple, and maybe Windows Phone, but I have no experience with any mobile development yet. Android is Java, which is basically only slightly different from C# syntax-wise, IOS is Objective-C, and Windows Phone is .NET. And so Windows Phone is probably where I will start.

Nokia Lumia 920 you figure? I'm a pretty open guy about my opinions, but I'm not sure if I like what Apple is doing now. Unless on the features side of IOS 7 something is considered "big" for improvements, I don't know. I've always been interested in seeing what Windows Phone was like though, and it wasn't even until I had an MVP meeting that I had seen any!!

If you've got experience with WinRT, Windows Phone won't be that much of a stretch. It's nice to be able to acquire a WP and make it a dev device, it's not nice to screw it up and have to reset it, but meh ;). You live and learn.

Settled then, we'll see what the Lumia line looks like when I'm out getting a new one, and that's most likely my choice. If Apple is just going to move over to the design style now, then the way I see it, I'm getting the same phone, just by 2 different companies. And Apple being the overpriced one.

It depends on your carrier as to what options you may have, but I'm not sure all the options in Canada and what phones they carry. I know the Lumia 920 is exclusive to Rogers, but again, not being from Canada I'm not sure what options you have for unlocked devices, plans, etc. I prefer the Lumia 920, 925, or 928, depending on the carrier. The 920 is the original WP8 Nokia device, and is slightly heavier and has an LED screen - the 925 and 928 are AMOLED with a mix of plastic and metal versus the metal casing on the 920, but otherwise are the same device internally. The 920 is probably going to be more durable long-term without a case than the 925 or 928, but that's just a guess - I haven't seen any videos online of anyone torturing one of those versus the torture videos of the 920 (some of which are pretty awesome, IMO). It isn't likely to survive hitting it with a hammer (as some people do - no phone I know survives the "hammer test"), but it does survive drops, on concrete or pavement, on the screen (I can confirm this, as can many others ;)) that break your average iPhone or Galaxy.

I must be totally honest - I do have *some* protection for the phone. I have a Skinomi screen protector to protect the coating on the Gorilla glass (yes, you read that right - the coating can actually scratch which looks like screen scratches on the glass, but are not - they're just as annoying though. You can't tell there's a screen protector on it, and it doesn't affect the touch sensitivity or the feel - and I have the white L920 without a case, so scuffs and scratches will show up as it's a glossy finish. I have none to speak of, but anything is possible if you're bound and determined to break it ;).

Ace, look at the Nokia Lumina 928 too. I've seen a lot of posts by the Windows Phone Facebook page and Twitter account about it and really looks nice.

For those drop tests, I don't think the Lumia landed straight on it's face at all. I would like to see that though... By the hammer test though in the one guys video the Lumia does seem stronger.

@Corrine - I think i'll get the 920 just because it's more metal.

edit:

VS:

The screen cracking on the Lumia doesn't work as well as an iPhone does it seems. Although these tests are extreme... The iPhone seems to function better even after taking some damage. Not that my phone would ever get this much damage because I have still never dropped any of my phones haha, but I think this is something that needs work on the 920. I think the curvature of the 920 makes it a bit stronger than the flat iPhone screen though, as long as there is support for the screen on the edges. An arc is a stronger structure based on common physics, but as long as the base endpoints are solid and can't move.

Back on topic though, do you think Apple has an official name for this new style? Maybe "Apple Design Style"?
