We polled 1,000 anonymous web users on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk about data brokers in September 13th, 2012. Ninety-five percent of people said they thought they should be able to remove their personal information from being publicly displayed on data broker sites, also called “people search sites” or info brokers.

The one-question multiple-choice poll read, “Companies called ‘data brokers’ collect and sell information about you. This information includes things like your address, estimated net worth, date of birth, religious and political views, photos, email, and family members’ names and ages. Do you think you should be able to remove this type of information from being publicly listed online?”

Do you think you should be able to remove this type of information from being publicly listed online? Absolutely, but will that ever happen?

We are given the choice publicly on multiple applications online as to whether or not to display this information, so why should others be able to reveal it without some kind of permission or formal consent? It should be illegal. The main information available to others who are criminals in identity theft, is available all over the net because of these people. Someone wants to assasinate you? Easy! They've probably already got information as to what job you have you're address, and down to the detail of what times you should be at work and at home, based on company standards if they can look it up.

You'd be surprised at how easy it is for anyone to get your SIN... That's how bad this is... It honestly enrages me as to how this is not an offense or considered illegal by law.
