I'm looking at the specs for an old HP dv6000 laptop that I'm playing with, trying to find a way to speed it up a bit. Yes, I know what you're thinking: Speed it up by speedily throwing it away and replacing it with a new one. But before I do that I thought I could get some cheap RAM on eBay and upgrade to at least 4GB or more if the system allows. I look at the owner's manual on the HP website and I see that depending on the processor, I can install up to 16384 gigabytes of RAM.

I'm not too knowledgeable about this stuff, but I'm thinking they mean megabytes.

What is a bit odd is I am not even finding any published specs to suggest the numeric portions are right. That is, I don't see where 16GB, let alone 8GB is supported. The most I can find is that notebook has 2 slots, each supporting a maximum of 2GB for, at most, 4GB total. And that's DDR2, not DDR3. And I don't see where that motherboard supports dual-channel either.

See these specs.

It's a 32 bit systems so it won't recognize more than 3.2 GB of RAM.

Here are the dv6000 models

If I click the first entry, it says maximum memory 2GB 2 slots of 1GB each
There are ssd upgrades but I'm not sure if it is worth the cost on a computer from 2006.
This is the cheapest at $50

There are different versions of this hp pavilion: dv-6000, dv2-6000, dv3-6000, dv4-6000, dv5-6000, dv6-6000, dv7-6000.

@xilolee - Do you have a link to that notebook? Specifically to the specs?

As noted by both mine and plodr's links, we are looking at DDR2.

Plus, not sure dv, dv2, dv3 etc. are different versions of the same notebook. In fact, I am sure they are not. If you look here for dv6 notebooks (or with plodr's models link), you can see the different versions are all designated dv6 something. For example, dv6-3200, dv6-3300, dv6-1100.

So the dv4 and dv5 series, as example, are totally different models - not different versions of the same model.

If you are familiar with Linux, it works well with old PC's/Laptops.
That would be my first choice as well having used Puppy for years. But this machine belongs to my sister-in-law who uses it about once a week. She is resistant to change as is obvious from the age of this laptop, and I'm afraid learning any Linux distro would be too much for her. I took a look on eBay and I can get 4GB for less than $20 so that will help at least a little. This model is the dv-6000 with a 32-bit processor so it will give her 3.2 GB of memory.
