$104 Million Unpaid - Pennsylvania Turnpike Tolls - 2020

When I lived in the Northeast I had EZ Pass. No need for it here. Two years ago I crossed a bridge near NYC and it was toll by camera. Really convenient so traffic didn't get tied up. I'm a good citizen so I paid by mail. Judging by the video, others aren't as considerate.

Just remember that "toll by camera" comes at a premium, and usually a significant one, over EZ Pass or the given state's equivalent thereof. If that's not the case in SC, then you are lucky indeed. The overhead involved with billing people justifies the premium, in my opinion.

I've used "toll by camera" myself in many venues where I had no real justification to obtain whatever automatic payment device was being used. But when I lived in the Metro DC area and was using the Dulles Toll Road on a constant basis, it was cheaper than cash to use the equivalent of EZ Pass and it was cheaper still than one-time "toll by camera."

The only toll that I know of in S.C. is on Hilton Head Island. It has its own version of EZ Pass. If there are any others, I've never encountered them.

Before I drove to Florida in '17 or '18, I knew my Pennsylvania (PA charges <10% of NJ monthly fee) Easy Pass did not cover Florida.

Some quick research pulled up North Carolina's Quick Pass - 100% free (responder, no fees) and it works from Maine to Florida and westward out to at least Illinois.

I filled out the application with my New Jersey address and got it 1-2 days later.

It only missed one toll reading during my 6 week trip to Florida.

Virginia - 1/2 of I-95 is a toll road. Quick Pass did not pick up 1 overhead reader; however, since the VA I-95 toll lanes were completely empty, I'm sure I was doing over 130 mph.

The free I-95 VA lanes - were a parking lot.
