Parents must attend - or no Senior Prom . . ??

I find this absurd and worthy of a test in court.

ALL Senior Cherokee students attenting the prom on Friday, May 11th MUST have a parent attend one of two parent prom meetings, even if they are not purchasing tickets.

Meetings will be held on Wednesday, May 2nd and Thursday, May 3rd at 7:00 pm in the North Cafeteria.

All tickets are $95 each and contracts will be handed out, signed by parents and collected before they leave. Guest contracts will also be handed out at this time. If purchasing tickets, they must be purchased at this time.

Cash or check (Checks made out to "Cherokee High School") Please put your students name in the memo section of the check.

There is nothing they could tell me that I haven't already discussed with my 18 year-old; it's in the school rules -

Any drug/alcohol or theft violation while on the senior trip or during the senior prom (even if it does not constitute the third suspension) will also result in the loss of the privilege of participation in commencement exercises and all other senior class activities.

    2011_2012 Student Handbook.pdf

Maybe they want to tell us to tell our kids that they should not do what we all did during our senior proms.

Re: Parents must attend - or no Senior Prom . . ??

I could perhaps understand a handout to be signed...

But any kid over 18 would be exempt....

Requiring parents to attend this is absurd...

I agree. A handout is fine, but having a compulsory meeting?

That being said, it may be needed. At my schools prom last year most of the students brought in alcohol and got drunk. So maybe a meeting isn't such a bad idea...

Signing a handout makes sense but they are fools if they think a compulsory meeting will make a difference.

    All tickets are $95 each
I gather the prom isn't in the high school gym. :)

the school's lawyer must have seen a case recently
in which a student had something happen, parents sued school.

    this is litigation avoidance.

    just guessing.

My Prom cost £25, and was organised by the students themselves. Some posh place got rented out.

Re: Parents must attend - or no Senior Prom . . ??

I didn't have my parents go to the senior prom or party or anything, other than the ceremony...

We went to an after grad party and had a DJ and everything, with drinks there; anybody over 18 with proof got a band to put on their wrist. Although I will admit, the underagers still got by with getting the 18+ year olds to go buy something for them.

Good times though... Still remember that haha. We were out pretty late, and it was one of the best times I've ever had out with friends.

$95, what are these groups paying for? lol I think mine was $60? $70? I can't remember, but definitely under $80. And mine was downtown too.

She can't (legally!) drink, so not quite adult.

Our "prom" cost $40 or so, and we were breathtested on the way in. With most of us being over legal drinking age (18) there had been problems in the past with people getting very drunk beforehand - not fun for the teachers to deal with so I understand why they did that. Everyone went clubbing after anyway (prom was held in a hotel in central city, so not far at all).

At 18 one is a legal adult here in the US. Responsibility for felonious acts cannot be transfered by proxy.

As for those with kids <18 - no idea.
