Recently i've been captivated by this atmospheric, down-tempo track from Sasha, called 'Rooms':

From the album 'Late Night Tales presents Sasha: Scene Delete' - An interesting listen if audio engineering/production/soundscapes are your thing. It's quite dark, moody and minimal - an ambient-ish soundtrack for late night coders :)

Hi Clive its Clive again :)Love the Sasha song nice chillout track. They played a gr8 new Sasha Track on my favourite Youtube music channel Aboive & Beyond Group Therapy, called Pontiac(well not sure if its that new).I'm into the Ajunabeats prog house/new trance sound. Was a club dj for 25 years till 18 months ago. Now trying to learn how to use Ableton Live 9 on my PC which i bought a few months ago, finding it extemely complicated,so very slow learning curve for me.Wish I got in production when I was younger.

Re: What are you listening to

Now this really IS getting spooky!

I'm also a DJ (all sorts of styles - but started off with Hard House/Hard Trance when that scene started getting big about 2000)

I'm a HUGE fan and user of Ableton Live too! I'm not the only Ableton-Clive lol

I first learnt to produce with Logic, before Apple bought/stole it away from the PC market. The transition to Ableton for production, took a while to get my head around for sure, it's how all the 'live' clips and stuff co-exist with a traditional track timeline.

Ableton does have a lot of good built in audio effects, that are really memory efficient, like the basic compressor and EQ etc. I don't tend to use the built in Synths/instruments, as I've built up a library of 3rd party VST plugins over the years.

Anything you want to know, just ask!

Re: What are you listening to

Wow 2 dj Clive's ur right spooky..lol. And like you I used to play hard house/trance too, but was dj'ing before house took over in the late eighties, music I started beat mixing dj'ing was Italo Disco...or Euro some people called it.

I was just a meagre resident dj in my local town though, so not really dj'ed in major/big clubs, but did dj quite a few days during the week, hence not having time to get into the production side of things.

I did give Logic a go on a Mac G4, but found it WAY over my head.Ableton seems a little easier, but I'm really a complete music production novice, compaired to you, by the sounds of it, so any help will be really useful Clive. :)

I've got a few weeks before I start to knuckle down with Ableton, as I need a break, and going on holiday in 3 weeks, for the 1st time in about 12 years.

Would love to produce some of the A&B/Anjunabeats sounds, They're mostly instrumentals on their label, so won't need to pay for vocalists or sample vocals to start with.

Thanks for the help and suggestions m8, really appreciate it

Re: What are you listening to

Yeah, Novation hardware and Ableton have always had a strong relationship; I have a Novation Nio audio interface, a Launchpad and an 'SL2 MkII Zero' - no keys just midi knobs, faders etc.

Keyboard wise, I have what I call my 'proper' keyboard - an M-Audio 49 Radium, full size keys, a few midi controllers on it too, but for a cheap, portable midi keyboard, I have an Xbox 360 Guitar Hero 3 'keytar' controller :) - battery powered with a midi out port, I got it for about £17 brand new! (With a bit of effort and Max for Live, I've always planned to make it wireless, but never got round to buying Max for live yet)

My favourite music tech magazine is Computer Music I only buy the occasional copy, (mainly the 'special' editions on specific topics like mastering, rather than the monthly ones) they usually include a DVD with free sample packs, but the real bonus is access to the 'CM vault' online - where you can download lots of free plugins/samples/tutorials. You can get digital editions on Google Play Magazines/Newsstand too - handy for specific back issues, and sometimes they have special offers on, I picked up a few for £2 each, a while ago. Nobody likes reading off a screen, but Play Newsstand has got a lot better over time, and viewing the content as text rather than the original pages, turns it into a nicely indexed webpage version of the mag.

My 'Bible' textbook of choice is 'Dance Music Manual' by Rick Snoman - it gets a bit of flack for typo and grammar errors, and it can be a bit daunting, especially on the music theory side, but it covers a huge range of topics. I have the 2nd edition from about 2009, which is now much cheaper 2nd hand than the current 3rd edition.

I shall stop rambling on like a geek now...

Re: What are you listening to

Don't worry lol....still a little over my head a little, but learning and willing to learn more, so I'm grateful about your knowledge.

I also got an M-Audio Midiman keyboard from when I was trying to learn Logic on the Mac. Wasn't keen on the Mac though, much prefer PC, and never had time to really get into it then, NOW I have though, so wanna really get started on Ableton.

Bought a beginners Video course which will probably be useful.

So many thanks for your interest Clive. :)

I think we can PM here so perhaps keep in touch that way if you like m8.:)
