If you copy your CBS folder from C:\Windows\Logs to your Desktop once again, zip it up and upload it somewhere for us, we should get all the information. Thanks for your patience. We are still trying to determine the exact cause for the Windows Update failure and it may be a secondary issue. If you can recall, can you tell me if there was an error during the initial attempted update or did the update fail when the computer rebooted? If the error was upon reboot do you remember what percentage it was at when it failed and which Windows Update KB number was involved? Please provide the C:\Windows\Inf\setupapi.dev.log again.

After reboot, I checked the installation logs in Windows Update, and it said KB2984972 didn' t install with error 80070490. It happened repeatedly these days. Historically there have been troublesome issues with KB2984972. We are going to bypass this Windows Update from 2014 and see if that will allow you to successfully install KB4499164. Navigate to the Windows Update screen then click the link to show which updates are available. Right click on KB2984972 and select Hide update. Attempt to install KB4499164. If this update fails please provide the CBS log.

Windows still ask me whether I want to install KB2984972. Should I hide it directly? I am afraid that the remains of KB2984972 would cause some negative effect. Last edited: May 27, 2019

This is true even given your experiences with KB2984972. It is not uncommon for a system to be offered the same Windows Update even after it has been properly installed. As problems have been reported in the past, it is best to simply hide this Update rather than risk potentially corrupting your system unnecessarily. At this point I see no reason for you to experience any future issues as a result of this Update being present on your system.
