Thanks for the reply Tom. I really have no idea how my computer got in such a mess. Never mind, I shall read the repair install and clean install links you kindly provided and see how I got on.

Ahh, hang on. Just realised that this wasn't my original post ! Just coincidence that you are having exactly the same error as me, and you'd posted to the Not received help post ! (Which I'm subscribed to) Please let me know if you get your issue resolved - it may well help me resolve mine too...
