BSOD perhaps linked to unusual disk failure?

I might have resolved this BSOD issue, but it's odd, so I'd like to ask for insightful comments as well. The machine is a stable 10 month old own-build Win 8.1 X79 IB-E workstation based on an Asus X79 Deluxe motherboard. It's heavily stability-tested a month ago, not stupidly overclocked...
