I did say it was long but i do not think that the printer issue is of any worry. ( mine works fine) I also think (with your help and others) that the defender issue is now sorted. My start up time has gone up 30% with adding MSE. and donetao . says my Avast security will cause problems, but...

Thanks Tekno. I am just getting access is denied even as Administrator:Command Prompt. The scan says it has found corrupt files but could not fix some of them. I managed to get this report a few days back (as posted earlier) so i will have to look into how i did it.

Yes Corrine. All seems well now apart from it taking 72secs to start up. I thought the update for defender that came after the error might have been a patch to fix the error code but it made no difference. I now see why. You would have thought that they would disable the 'turn on' link in...

Just out of interest why would the Program Files\Windows Defender be showing up as corrupted? It was fine before the windows update.:confused2:

Thanks for the reply all. The error code appeared after a windows update. I then faffed about trying to sort the problem out but the defender icon kept popping up each day in the bottom right tray (showing a ! over the icon.) I then let the tech guys have a look but they all wanted money...
