I'm going to factory restore it today. There's no longer any need to recover the installation as we now have the install files and license for the software. Thanks for all the help.

Sorry there's more since my last post... I've tried a couple of other things since then, mainly kb3125574 in the hope it might overwrite some of the problems and a few attempts to get the Diagnostic Policy Service to run (it didn't). Here's the latest CBS.log.

Sorry if this isn't clear, I ran checksur as well because that seemed to make the list of updates appear. Then I've tried to download and manually install two updates that seemed to be listed as inportant. It is a bit wierd though because in each case if you go to MS you get a list of six files...

Update Actually I think it is the exact same result, FC matches them line-for-line apart from the timestamp.
