OK! Success! The stuck update is now installed. I have no idea what ju-ju that was.. but it has done the trick. I can't thank you enough. If you have paypal, i'd like to buy you a beer! Can you tell me what the problem was (corruption of the COMPONENTS hive?) or if it is likely to reoccur...

Hi softwaremaniac, I've done the above. It looked to have worked, it got to the end and asked me to restart to complete. During the restart, it looked to have installed and configured some update - got to 30% restarted and then resumed the rest and restarted again to desktop. So whatever...

I should add the name of the patch that is (currently) failing: it was KB4467107 and the code was: 8024200D
