It fails after the reboot. Windows is restarting when I get a message saying something like: Reconfiguring Windows... After a short while it says: Failed to reconfigure Windows, reverting to previous restore point. The computer then reboots and recovers. Afterwards, the update history file shows...

OK SM, I uninstalled Security Essentials using Control Panel>Programs and Features as per Microsoft instruction and shut down Windows Defender (no removal tool available for either). I removed Malwarebytes with their removal tool. I rebooted and ran 2018-12 Security Rollup and it failed again. I...

Thanks SM, I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Premium. Both are current. Please confirm that I should remove Essentials or both. I'll do it tomorrow. Happy New Year SM.

Thanks Softwaremaniac, I installed 3 updates that previously failed. I rebooted after each one and 2 installed successfully. Woohoo! Update 2018-12 Security Monthly Quality Rollup (KB4471318) failed. Bugger! The CBS.log link is Dropbox - CBS - Simplify your life
