Windows Update status just moved to "Successful" - huge thanks for a huge effort, @softwaremaniac. Thanks for your patience and willingness to keep going through this process, it is really appreciated.

[SOLVED] Update KB4343900 Fails Error 80070003 (Windows 7)

We may have progress - the update got to 30% on the logoff screen and then appeared to progress to 100% when re-starting, although it hung around at 32% for ages and then moved so quickly I didn't actually see the 100% figure. It is now showing as "Pending" in the Update History with error code...
