System came back with a dialog asking me to uninstall "Brother Printing Device software" (I have a Brother laser printer so that wasn't a surprise). System offered that I could cancel the update, returning to it later. I cancelled. I then uninstalled the Brother stuff and rebooted the machine...

Windows 8.1 Pro is downloading in Microsoft Store "Installs" screen. "Updates (28)" displayed in top right corner. This is good. Starting to feel happy. At "Checking compatibility" as I type this.

In line 3 of message #18 just above, I should have typed "that it had indeed stopped" rather than "that it will never check". Oops. By the time I realized that mistake, it seems that my editing window had closed!

Well... now past 24 hours and Windows Update is still chugging away (that green line keeps emerging from the left and disappearing to the right). I'm thinking that I'll leave it running until you instruct otherwise.

At what point would it be reasonable to assume that it's hung (Windows Update hanging in simply checking for updates, not yet offering to apply any)? I guess leaving it running overnight would be the least I could do? (It's 3:30pm here.)
