I let Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu (System Update Readiness Tool) run for about two hours and it never got past "installing" however, when I opened the CheckSur.log file in notepad, the msu finally completed. So I don't know if it was in fact complete or whether I interrupted it. Anyway...

I finally made a concerted effort yesterday to correct the problem. I had uncorrectable errors when I ran sfc /scannow with fde, fdeploy and gptext.dll but used a version of sfcfix I found to correct those errors and had hoped that it would also resolve the windows update problem. But without...
