Laptop wont shut down or sleep, just reboots

I had a bit of dampness on my laptop after it was used outside . I had to change the keyboard and the other problem was it was impossible to shutdown , I already tried an extensive list of fixes etc ,all details can be found here

Laptop wont shut down or sleep, just reboots - Internal Hardware ,

nothing helped , then after 6 weeks of the problem it started shutting down OK , it shutdown 4 days in a row no problem but now the problem has started again , the admin thought it could be a hardware problem somewhere in the charging circuit, any ideas someone , thanks

Re: Laptop wont shut down or sleep, just reboots

Hi kaz - sorry to read about your problems with this notebook. I am not sure I have anything more to offer as others have offered an extensive list of things to try - so honestly I am mostly just thinking (guessing???) out loud here.

I note the focus has been on all this starting after the notebook was left outside overnight and got wet - but you specifically said it started after the notebook was disassembled and the keyboard replaced. You didn't mention power problems before replacing the keyboard - only that "the keyboard was knackered" and after replacing it, the power problems started.

Is it an exact replacement OEM keyboard? And how certain are you no wires were pinched and the connectors are securely fastened? How confident are you that nothing else spilled on it? Could your buddies be afraid to confess they spilled nimbu pani on it and now the power or reset buttons are gummed up with sugars? I would almost be tempted to put back in the old keyboard now that it has had plenty of time for it to dry out and see what happens - taking extra care to inspect and clean as much of the interior while at it, and extra care to ensure no wires are pinched and connectors are secure.

If you remove the battery and run from just the charger/power supply, does it shut down properly?

Two different operating systems suggests it is not the OS.

Hi , shutdown problem started at same time as keyboard problem , the day after the notebook was outside the keyboard was not functioning properly and when I tried to shutdown it wouldnt. Pretty confident nothing was spilled on it as when I removed keyboard it was bone dry everywhere. There was only some dampness on the keys in the morning. Pretty sure no wires were pinched and the connectors are securely fastened. The new keyboard is OEM.
Wont shutdown with battery removed either

Re: Laptop wont shut down or sleep, just reboots

Hmmm, this is odd for sure. You said you performed a "clean start". Did you mean "Clean Boot"?

Do you keep any attached devices connected to this notebook?

I ask because I had a "similar" problem on one computer here where the computer never went to sleep. It tried like it was supposed to but immediately rebooted. But I could tell it to shutdown, and it would with no problems. And the problem started only after updating to Windows 10 from W7. It took awhile for me to finally figure out what was happening - though I still don't know why it was happening.

To more or less fix (it is more of a work-around) the problem I had to go into device manager and for my mouse and keyboard under Properties > Power Management, I had to uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer". As soon as I did that, 15 minutes later, the computer went to sleep as it is supposed to.

Now again, I said "similar" problem and not the same because I was able to shutdown the computer. But you still might look at some of the devices in Device Manager and see how they are set. Check your network devices too.

Do you open and close the lid and move the notebook from place to place regularly? I am trying to figure out why it worked fine for several days then started giving problems again. Working/not working as it is moved about could support the loose connection/pinched wire theory.

Sorry , should have said clean boot , no devices attached to the notebook , notebook never moved at all in the period from working/not working and I'm pretty sure I never closed the lid . I have already tried disabling various items under power management about allowing device to wake computer and no luck

I am afraid I am out of ideas but will keep thinking about it. You wanted a new notebook anyway, right?

Re: Laptop wont shut down or sleep, just reboots

worst case scenario is leaving it on constantly or disconnecting and letting the battery drain as the notebook works perfectly except the shutdown problem

Re: Laptop wont shut down or sleep, just reboots

Yeah, but every time a computer shuts down in that way there is risk of corruption of critical system and any other open files. Plus, occasionally letting a battery fully discharge in fine, but not sure that would be good every time. So maybe leaving the battery out would be better.
