Many people use CCleaner for cookie management. However, beyond that, registry cleaners, optimizers, tuneup programs tend to do more harm than good. Taking it a step further, Microsoft does not support the use of registry cleaners. See Microsoft support policy for the use of registry cleaning utilities.

I think lumping CCleaner in with "other same tools" is a mistake - and a position I have been taking for many years. Yes, it has a Registry cleaner but it is no where near as aggressive as tools marketed as "registry cleaners", registry and system optimizers, registry fixers and other products that promise snake-oil like, better than new, remedies for your computer. I use CCleaner on a regular basis on all my systems and systems that come across my bench to "maintain" those computers in good working order. That is, I start using CCleaner on my systems from day 1 and regularly thereafter. I do not recommend any registry cleaner to "fix" Windows that is broken. I do not agree with my colleagues who say CCleaner's Registry cleaner should never be used. Piriform is no new kid on the block that produces haphazard programs. Sure, you will find examples where users say CCleaner broke my system. But CCleaner is used by 10s if not 100s of millions of users. The evidence is just not there to suggest that CCleaner will wreck your system. Again, I am speaking ONLY of CCleaner and none of the others and I feel strongly when discussing Registry cleaners, CCleaner should not be lumped in the others.

The other programs are basically junkware and to be avoided, they do not provide any solutions and some on occasion have caused BSODs.
