New Drivers Submitted for an Open Source Project

    Hi ^_^,

I was just reviewing the temporary entries in the Carrona DRT and found the below entry -

    Username - devart

    Name - firebirdodbc.sys

Information - Devart ODBC Driver for Firebird provides high-performance and feature-rich connectivity solution for ODBC-based applications to access Firebird databases from Windows, Linux, MacOS, both 32-bit and 64-bit. Full support for standard ODBC API functions and data types implemented in our driver makes interaction of your database applications with Firebird fast, easy and extremely handy.

    Download Source - https://www.devart.com/odbc/firebird/download.html

    Origin - https://www.devart.com/odbc/firebird/
There are several such entries in the DRT of different drivers with almost similar description. I visited the website and it seems legit.

The drivers submitted by this guy do not have any Google Search Results. I searched for the drivers using the quotes (""). When I did not use any quotes, vague results came up.

My question is, should we accept these drivers in the DRT or not? Asking this because Carrona told me that we accept the drivers which show up in the Dump files but these drivers do not show any kind of results on Google.

    Regards,
    - Pranav

Re: New Drivers Submitted for an Open Source Project

Personally, I would adjust the information and accept it.

The current info is too much like advertisement to me.

    I would change it to:
    Devart ODBC Driver for Firebird

Yep. It is kind of advertisement.

Although the first question is whether to accept this or not. Since, these drivers haven't shown themselves in the Dump files.

Re: New Drivers Submitted for an Open Source Project

The site looks genuine and I don't think we lose anything from adding them.

Their product seems to be more aimed at industry than consumers so I doubt it will show up in very many BSODs we see although it may generate hits from google.

Could it be the first instances of SPAM in the DRT?
I hesitate to approve them if someone is using them to advertise themselves.
If so, then what's to stop others from making up things so they can get advertised?

Re: New Drivers Submitted for an Open Source Project

Further looking at it, it seems to be word for word what's on their home page.
Also, I didn't see anything about Open Source - and it seems to me that they are selling this project.
I'd says it's SPAM and doesn't need to be in the DRT.

Personally, I would adjust the info and add it as I stated above.

    Look at it this way:
    1. Its spam. We lose nothing by adding it, are likely to generate no hits for them and may even get traffic from it.
    2. It's a genuine product, great! We are on the ball and have added it before anyone else has. This means anyone searching for it will likely land on our page as no other documentation will exist.

Honestly, I see no reason not to add it. Genuine or not we can only gain from it.

Geoff is right. I just don't like Spammers - even if they're ineffective!
Go ahead and add it. Thanks for bringing this up Pranav!

I completely agree about the spammers which is why we scrapped all their extra info :)

I honestly don't think it was meant to be malicious. Perhaps its just my views of the world but I enjoy helping the small guys. (Especially if they know of the DRT and took the time to fill the form out )

Re: New Drivers Submitted for an Open Source Project

Alright. I have modified these drivers' description. They should be accepted soon and would be available. Marking this as Solved.

    Thanks a lot!
