    Alienware 17 X R5 - New System - BSOD Problems -

    Hello everyone,

A friend of mine recommended you guys as a last resource of help in finding the trigger of my BSOD errors.
The system is still under warranty but I am scared about the lack of knowledge of dell tech support from Eastern Europe ( no offence to anyone ), had problems with other system and took 2 and half months to fix.

If this will result to be a hardware problem I will go the dell service way but I hope from the bottom of my soul that the final result will be software / drivers related.
The system is giving random BSOD's since day 3, after I installed couple of random software + windows updates.
    - Imagined I did something wrong, went for a full restore using the recovery hidden partition from dell, same problem.
    - Imagined is OS related, installed windows 7, same problems.
    - Re-installed windows 8, windows 8.1, again 7 and so on, same problem.

After following guidance from my friends forum I updated the bios to the latest version and also the mSATA firmware.

MemTest was passed, left it running until the message with "press ESC to exit" appeared ( no errors found ), did all the scan for errors on the drive procedures.
Did all the hardware test from both windows and bios tools provided by dell ( no errors found ).

Without the video drivers the system appears to be a little more stable.

I am willing to do all the necessary steps required to detect the problem, even if it takes a clean install of the OS ( I am used to it ).

    Code:
     OS - Vista/ Windows 7, Windows 8 ? - Windows 8
    и x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? - X64
и What was original installed OS on system? - Yes
и Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? - OEM ( came with system )
и Age of system (hardware) - 2 months
и Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? - 4 days

    и CPU - Intel i7 4900MQ
    и Video Card - 1x Intel HD 4600 + 1x Nvidia GTX 780M
    и MotherBoard - Alienware 068R5X
и Power Supply - brand & wattage (if laptop, skip this one)

    и System Manufacturer - Dell
и Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) - Alienware 17x R5
I am using the system right now without the video, killer lan, free fall sensor, and keyboard lights drivers.
I am afraid that installing either of them will result in BSOD.

    Some of the symptoms:
I get random BSOD errors, in some cases ( with all the drivers installed ) the nVidia video card is no where to be found, not available in device manager, the nvidia control panel no longer in task bar, acts like the card was physically removed from the system. Rebooting the system does not help, to make the video card show up again, power of and on is needed, this only occurs when all drivers are installed.

The BSOD are random, most of them while the system is idle. I get 80% of BSOD if I simply browse youtube with no background apps running.

8 different named causes out of 13 dump files usually means hardware.
I do see a couple older VMware drivers on the system you could try updating the vmware install or uninstalling it> VMware Support & Downloads for Desktop, Application & Data Center Virtualization | United States

What version of memtest did you run Memtest86+ or another?
D/L Memtest+ run it for at least 6 passes with 32gig of ram that will probably take at least a day.

    Code:

    Re: Alienware 17 X R5 - New System - BSOD Problems -

    Thank you for your reply.
I did try MemTest86+, will re-run the process and let it overnight.
I don't think VMWare is the cause because I am getting the same problems with it uninstalled.

Will post as soon as I will have result from MemTest86+

Unable to edit my previous post, sorry about double-posting.

Wanted to ask if we can pin-point this to the specific hardware part causing the errors. I just want to avoid endless service times, also since this is not a 200$ system maybe I can request the system to be exchanged in full with a new one ( don't know if it's possible yet ).
I will let memtest run tonight and check it out in the morning.

Is there anything else I can do meantime ?

Memtest86+ is the starting point to test the memory part of the hardware, the rest gets tougher.
Do you have a SSD or a Platter hard drive?

    I have both, 1 mSATA Liteonit LMT-256M6M and 1 Hitachi HTS727575A9E364.
Will have a definite answer in the morning for memtest, the first time I ran it was quite fast 1 hour and 30 minutes or so and received the message: *** Pass complete, no errors, press Esc to exit ***
Should I let it do more passes ?

We usually recommend at least 6 or until you see a error on screen but Memtest86+ appears to have changed with the latest version, it use to just run until you shut it off...........

It's new so the SSD should not need a firmware update but it's worth checking on the Alienware site to see if there is one.

Already went and updated the ssd firmware a few days ago, there was an optional update on dell's support page, same goes for bios, they have released 2 bios updates in 3 days.

I am running the system with 20% of the drivers installed. I got a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION BSOD a few minutes ago, if needed I can upload the dmp, just let me know.
I have no video drivers, no sound drivers, no lan drivers, etc etc... This makes the system BSOD once in 2 - 3 days.
Before the DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION BSOD the system froze for about 30 seconds...

The freeze would be related since a deferred procedure call(DPC) spent a prolonged time at an interrupt request level (IRQL) of dispatch level or higher.

I think you need to contact Alienware and have it sent in for warranty repairs or replacement although replacements are seldom offered on the first attempt.
Do they still offer the onsite repair within 24 hrs?

    Re: Alienware 17 X R5 - New System - BSOD Problems -

I was hoping to pin down the hardware causing the problems before sending it, since it's hardware related the system will 100% end up at dell, but wanted to know the exact cause of the problems to provide it to them for faster servicing.
I think they are aware of some errors since they released 2 critical bios updates in 3 days.

I will try with memtest and see what the result will tell.
Their hardware diagnostics tool is kind of useless since it is doing a surface scan on parts.
I am afraid of sending the system into dell cause of the long waiting time, I already lost a big amount of money since my work got ruined each time BSOD came up and had to take it up from the beginning.
