Win 8 Crashes during sleep, deactivates license, kills USB ports

    Windows 8 pro x64
upgraded from Windows 7 Pro x64
Retail upgrade, although I think my Windows 7 Pro was OEM.
Age of system is mixed (video card and CPU were bought in April 2012, motherboard and RAM January this year, optical drives and SSD are from 2011)
OS was Refreshed by MS tech support recently (due to activation problems)
    Intel i7-3770K
    nVidia GTX 680
    Asus Sabertooth Z77
    Corsair 650HX power supply
    Home built system

This computer and Windows 8 are driving me crazy. I'm getting frequent crashes, usually while the computer is in sleep. I get the message that the computer crashed and was restarted when I wake it. When the computer wakes after these crashes, my Windows 8 license is de-activated and some of my USB ports no longer work (the ones on the top of my case and on my Dell monitor). When I try to restart, the computer usually hangs and I have to use the reset button. After the hard reset, everything is fine (windows activated and USB ports functioning normally). Microsoft tech support tried to trouble shoot the problem, because of the activation issue, and basically did a system Refresh. However, I soon found that this did not solve the issue.

I've also posted on Windows 8 Forums, and they had me run SFC /SCANNOW, which didn't turn up anything and suggested Resetting Windows 8 if that didn't help. I'd like to avoid the reset, A. because I doubt it will do anything that my recent Refresh already did and B. Because I have several 2D and 3D graphics programs installed that require licenses be de-activated and re-activated which is a huge pain. I have a feeling that it is probably having issues with one piece of hardware or driver, and that if I replace this it should work fine.

    Hope you can help.

    Thanks.

Hello Roger Eberhart and welcome to Sysnative.

Could you create a Speccy system snapshot as well??

Speccy - System Information - Free Download

Download the program, install it... Run it. When it creates the report, publish a system snapshot and post the URL in your next reply.

    Thanks,

    GZ

Re: Win 8 Crashes during sleep, deactivates license, kills USB ports

    Hi -

What is the origin of the Windows 8 ISO? Most dumps contain a checksum error for win32k -
    Code:
*** WARNING: Unable to verify checksum for win32k.sys
Event Viewer logs are littered with these -- I've never seen them before:
    Code:
The NVIDIA Stereoscopic 3D Driver Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

A pointer device did not report a valid unit of angular measurement.

A pointer device has no information about the monitor it is attached to.
    USB - Kingston USB device?
    Code:
The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device WpdBusEnumRoot\
    UMB\2&37c186b&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN_KINGSTON&PROD_DT_101_II&
    REV_1.00#001CC0EC2F24AA2176B61029&0#.
A corrupted upgrade/install of Windows 8 may be to blame here. It is difficult to say.

Is the firmware for your OCZ-VERTEX3 SSD upgraded?

Re: Win 8 Crashes during sleep, deactivates license, kills USB ports

I purchased by Windows 8 upgrade online from Microsoft. I downloaded Windows8-Setup.exe and it gives you an option to burn the media to disk.

I might try uninstalling and re-installing my nVidia drivers. That may help with the stereoscopic viewer service, etc. I'll never use that feature anyway, so I may as well just not install that component when I re-install the driver.

The Kingston USB device is just a USB drive I had plugged-in when I ran the diagnostics. I've got my motherboard BIOS files on it. I was thinking about re-flashing my BIOS.

The firmware on my SSD is not the latest. I'll try updating that.

I would hold of on that for the time being. You already have the latest released BIOS which has the latest Windows 8 compatability tweaks...

I fear that jcgriff hit the nail on the head with this... I believe it is a corrupted upgrade and/or software issue.

Do you have a spare SATA drive available?

I've removed the nVidia 3D Vision drivers and updated my SSD's firmware to the latest version.

Yes, I've got an old 1tb WD Caviar Black (I replaced this one, which is SATA 2, with a SATA 3 for my data drive).

Re: Win 8 Crashes during sleep, deactivates license, kills USB ports

In this situation, here is what I would do.

    Install the old SATA drive.
Install Windows 8 on the old SATA drive (fresh installation).
Install latest drivers for your hardware.
Test the Windows 8 installation to see if you have the same issues.

What this will do is rule out a botched/corrupted installation and any other software issues that could arise from an upgrade.
If it does have issues, similar or different, it should make it easier to pinpoint the issue if it is driver/hardware related.

And since you have a spare drive, you will have no need to modify or delete your current installation.

If you are worried about preserving your data and current installation, you could disconnect the SSD and Data drives from the system board.

I do understand the wish to not have to go through the trouble of deauthorizing an installation of software and having to reauthorize it again. I have to go through that with my wife's system (Adobe Suite and Fireworks require this)... In her case, we decided to run a dual-boot of Windows 7 and Windows 8 due to the same issues...

Re: Win 8 Crashes during sleep, deactivates license, kills USB ports

Wasn't worried about losing data, just the hassle of de-activating and re-activating a bunch of licenses. All my data is segregated onto a separate data drive and backed up to a Synology NAS. Went ahead with a Windows Reset. Things are looking positive so far. I'll give it a few more days to see if it's really fixed.
