Re: BSOD - Few things to try while waiting...

I agree with you all that a bad/ underpowered PSU can cause BSODs.

But a good percentage of the systems we deal with are OEM - many are laptops.

This HP dv7 laptop was the 4th one I got in 2008 - returned the others because of freezing. This one froze too. I was told I needed to upgrade the PSU.

I didn't - instead, I got rid of NIS and elevated the laptop about 2". All has been fine except HDD replacement in Summer 2010.

What I see happening at other forums - instructing BSOD OPs to replace hardware, before the dump files are ever read. IMHO, in general - that is wrong. If available, the dumps should be looked at first.

I am no hardware expert, but I have a difficult time believing that so many new name-brand OEM systems, whether desktops or laptops, with no additional hardware added (like video cards; monitors, etc...) are in need of upgraded PSUs. I've seen warranties voided because of such actions.

Yes, I have seen quiet a bit of that... The power supply circuitry is located on the motherboard in laptops. The charger is, simply, a power adapter/converter.
