    XP BSOD (Bluescreen) - atapi.sys?

    Hi,

I have a BSOD that keeps coming up on my machine, I also find that I cannot update SuperAntispyware.

I have been helped by the guys over on Help2go but they suggested that I post my problem here. The thread on help2go can be found here.

Here is a 'Whocrashed' log if it helps

    System Information (local)

    computer name: BLACKDELL
windows version: Windows XP Service Pack 3, 5.1, build: 2600
    windows dir: C:\WINDOWS
    CPU: GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz Intel586, level: 6
2 logical processors, active mask: 3

    Crash Dump Analysis

    Crash dump directory: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump

Crash dumps are enabled on your computer.

On Mon 21/05/2012 09:57:38 GMT your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini052112-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: atapi.sys (atapi+0xD50C)
    Bugcheck code: 0x7A (0xFFFFFFFFC05CF830, 0xFFFFFFFFC000000E, 0xFFFFFFFFB9F0650C, 0x1A945860)
    Error: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
    file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\atapi.sys
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
    description: IDE/ATAPI Port Driver
Bug check description: This bug check indicates that the requested page of kernel data from the paging file could not be read into memory.
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time.

    Conclusion

1 crash dumps have been found and analyzed.
Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is actually responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

    Can somebody help please?

    Re: BSOD (Bluesceen) - atapi.sys?

    Sorry about that.

    For XP:

Download these 2 files; save both to My Documents folder -
    1. Microsoft SysInternals AutoRuns - http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe
    2. jcgriff2 XP BSOD file collection app - http://sysnative.com/0x8/BSOD_XP_v1.3_jcgriff2_PROD_.exe

Go to My Documents folder and run #2. It will run #1.

Output = newly created folder in My Docs - TSF_XP_Support

Zip up the entire folder and attach to next post.

    Run Speccy - http://www.filehippo.com/download_speccy
    - "File" | "Publish Snapshot" | Paste URL into your next post

    Debugging Details:
    -----------------
ERROR_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc000000e - A device which does not exist was specified.

DISK_HARDWARE_ERROR: There was error with disk hardware

    BUGCHECK_STR: 0x7a_c000000e

Were you using the CD drive at the time of this error?

I assume that for some reason it's not writing a dmp file on crash and is auto rebooting?

If so you may need to turn auto reboot off and copy the BSOD info down by hand.

    KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (7a)
The requested page of kernel data could not be read in. Typically caused by
a bad block in the paging file or disk controller error. Also see
    KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR.
If the error status is 0xC000000E, 0xC000009C, 0xC000009D or 0xC0000185,
it means the disk subsystem has experienced a failure.
If the error status is 0xC000009A, then it means the request failed because
a filesystem failed to make forward progress.
    Arguments:
Arg1: c05cf830, lock type that was held (value 1,2,3, or PTE address)
Arg2: c000000e, error status (normally i/o status code)
Arg3: b9f0650c, current process (virtual address for lock type 3, or PTE)
Arg4: 1a945860, virtual address that could not be in-paged (or PTE contents if arg1 is a PTE address)

This appears to be a IDE Optical drive, it may be failing or all these issues may add up to a failing motherboard.

The machine won't boot now, it says:

Inserting an index entry into index $O of file 1608 and fills the screen with this message.

Looks like I have a dirty bit set....I've been here before!

    Hi, Joe.

Edit Note: Follow Wrench97's instructions first. Let us know how it work and then respond about ComboFix.

I note from your log at Help2Go signs of ComboFix. ComboFix is a very powerful tool. As the developer has indicated, if it is used incorrectly it may render your machine to a doorstop, thus the warnings when launching ComboFix.

Because results from HijackThis are not completely accurate these days, I cannot tell if you were able to successful run ComboFix. If it ran, please provide a copy of the log (located at C:\Qoobox\ComboFix.txt).
    zigzag3143 says thanks for this.

I don't have the install disc no. Last time this happened, I fixed it myself bu launching in safe mode with command prompt and switching the dirty bit off.

I haven't run combofix lately. I have only ever run it when directed by the guys at help2go
