    Post [Win7SP1 x64] BSOD on my laptop MSI GE60 (i7, GTX 860M)

    hi

today a BSOD occured on one of my laptops (Model: MSI GE60, i7, GTX 860M). After reboot a message appeared on the desktop. I made screenshots of this message ('unexpected shutdown'):
both screenshots are attached to this post ("BSOD_A_GE60.jpg" and "BSOD_A_GE60.jpg").
I already uploaded both mini dump files to dropbox ('061717-9391-01.dmp' and '061717-8954-01.dmp'). There were no other dump files in this directory ('minidump_folder_date_17_06_17.jpg').
All my screenshots are in german language.

    btw:
few days ago i installed "Kaspersky Internet security 2017" on this laptop. In the past i've been using F-Secure Internet security 2017. Maybe that change caused the BSOD.....

thx a lot and greets from Germany!

Re: BSOD on my laptop (Win7x64)

    Hi LASERoneZZZ (and everybody).

Verify to have uninstalled properly F-secure using their uninstallation tool (click) and try to reinstall the program (containing embda64.sys).

Information about the ram sticks (found inside minidumps):
    - ADATA AM1L16BC4R1-B1PS: 4GB - 204Pin SO-DIMM - PC3L-12800s - DDR3L-1600 - CL11 - 1.35V
    - Kingston 99U5469-045.A00LF (KVR16LS11/4): 4GB - 204Pin SO-DIMM - PC3L-12800 - DDR3L-1600 - CL11 - 1.35V

The minidumps say the BSOD is "Probably caused by : emBDA64.sys" (649472 bytes = 634.25 KB).
    What's that?
    It seems it could be:
    - Sonic Solutions - roxio Game Capture.
    - VideoHome - 4eyegrab
    - TerraTec - Cinergy (television on PC - DVB adapters)
    - eMPIA Technology (empiatech.com.tw) - USB 28xx Device

Re: BSOD on my laptop (Win7x64)

    hi !
thanks a lot for your support!

    ____*A)_________
i'm currently running "Kaspersky Internet Security 2017" on this laptop. Few days ago i uninstalled
"F-secure internet security 2017" using the uninstaller tool for F-Secure IS 2017. I found this uninstallation
tool at bleepingcomputer.com: F-Secure Uninstallation Tool Download

I performed the following steps to (clean) uninstall F-Secure:

    a) i uninstalled F-Secure via: Control Panel --> uninstall programs.
    b) after the uninstallation has fisnihed: i rebooted the laptop.
    c) I started the uninstalleation tool for F-Secure IS.
    d) after the removal tool has finished successfully i rebooted the laptop.
    e) i started the installation of Kasperky IS 2017

Should i now run the uninstaller for F-Secure (see POST #05) once again in Safe Mode (see POST #06) ?

    ____*B)_________
i searched my laptop for the file, that caused the BSOD (embda64.sys): the search results are attached
to this post (see screenshot: 'search_results_SYSNATIVE_embda64_sys.jpg').
I'm using this TV stick to watch TV/listen to radio on my laptop: TerraTec Cinergy HTC Stick HD

This stick has been discontinued by manufacturer. The BSOD occured while the TV/Radio stick was in use (i was watching TV).
So i will reinstall the Terratec software/drivers as soon as possible and i then i also will update the driver "embda64.sys".

thx a lot and greets from Germany !

    ____EDIT_______

I purchased a RAM upgrade (4 GB RAM) for this laptop. The additional modules were recommended
and upgraded by the online shop. It's a well known online hardware shop in Germany with a very good reputation

    Hi. . .

Make sure the additional 4GB RAM matches the existing RAM if you are adding. If replacing RAM, you should be OK.

Use the F-Secure removal from this ESET KB article - Uninstallers (removal tools) for common Windows antivirus software—ESET Knowledgebase

Re: BSOD on my laptop (Win7x64)

... ^^ no everything is working fine: no problems, no BSODs... :) I simply stopped using the TV-stick to avoid another BSOD (i disconnected the stick from USB-port).

In the past 4-5 years i had a lot of crashes while running this stick/TV-software. I frequently could see this message on my W7-laptops: "this program stopped working
and must be closed....". This stick has been discontinued by manufacturer and there are no win 8.1 or Win 10 drivers for this stick on the homepage. I'm also running
W8.1 on my second laptop and soon W10 (home/pro) on a brand new convertible/2in1 (lenovo yoga). I think the best solution is to buy a brand new stick with full W10/W8.1 (driver) support.

    btw:
...at this time i'm still trying to collect some informations about TV-cards/sticks....
...this one seems to be ok:
    Hauppauge Computer Works : WinTV-soloHD

    Look for an updated driver.

Go into Device Manager, look at 'driver' tab to get driver name.

Look up the driver in the DRT - Driver Reference Table

I don't believe there is an updated driver, or at least there wasn't a few years ago. I had the same TV stick, and I ended up having to buy new hardware for the same reason LASERoneZZZ is looking. I was getting blue screen crashes from time to time in Windows 8/8.1 due to the TV stick.

Therefore you (or we?) could mark this thread as solved, even if the solution was to "stop using the TV-stick to avoid other BSODs and/or crashes".

Post Re: [Win7SP1 x64] BSOD on my laptop MSI GE60 (i7, GTX 860M)

    hi

    sorry for this delay!
I was trying to find an updated driver for the TV stick. I searched the page with drivers (see POST #07) and
i found this driver package with the updated driver (emBDA64.sys), see section "DVB-S products":

    "PCTV DVB-S2 Stick (461e)" Driver(32&64bit) for XP, Vista, Win7, Win8

The driver "emBDA64.sys" from the driver package is newer (see screenshot "properties_updated_emBDA64_sys.jpg") than
the driver installed on my laptop (see screenshot: "properties_outdated_driver_on_my_system_emBDA64.jpg"). I will replace
the driver and i will 'test' (for a while) if the new driver works properly...

thx and greets from germany !

I'm curious to see how this works out for you. I still have my USB PCTV stick, so if your crashes stop, I might still be able to use mine.

    Re: [Win7SP1 x64] BSOD on my laptop MSI GE60 (i7, GTX 860M)

    hi

few minutes ago i renamed the old driver files "emBDA64.sys" and copied the newer version of "emBDA64.sys" into both terratec folders on my system.
(locations of both files: see POST #08; screenshot: 'search_results_SYSNATIVE_embda64_sys.jpg')

Unfortunately onother BSOD occured. I uploaded the minidump file to dropbox, here is the link:

    Dropbox - 070517-7425-01.dmp

thx and greets from germany !

___EDIT: in my opinion there are too many (heavy) problems with this hardware. I think it's better to buy a brand new piece of hardware to avoid onother BSODs ....or even data loss....

    Re: [Win7SP1 x64] BSOD on my laptop MSI GE60 (i7, GTX 860M)

In case you're interested in the cause of the crash, I did a quick analysis. Same culprit:

    Code:
Windows 7 Kernel Version 7601 (Service Pack 1) MP (8 procs) Free x64

    System Uptime:0 days 0:00:29.207

*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for emBDA64.sys

*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for emBDA64.sys

    Probably caused by :emBDA64.sys ( emBDA64+16416 )

.... ^^ that means: the game is over for this stick.... :/

Soon i will take a closer look at some brand new TV-sticks/external TV-cards on the market with driver support for all 3 windows OSs (W7, W8.1, W10).

Thanks a lot for your support in this case guys !!!
