Random crashes with and without BSOD

*** I was unable to get Performance Monitor to generate a report; it just stayed on the screen that says "Collecting data for 60 seconds" for much more than 60 seconds.

My computer has had random BSOD crashes and some shutdowns without a BSOD. There are three main types of crashes I have experienced:

    1. BSOD with error message which can be seen in crash dumps - common when stress testing with Prime95 and Furmark even without overclocking
    2. Display freezes and speakers emit a buzzing sound (seems like a continuous loop of the sound that was playing) - common when gaming, but has happened when watching YouTube
    3. Display goes black and computer restarts with no warning signs or other symptoms - can happen anytime

A couple more thing to note:

    1. Enabling XMP results in BSOD
    2. Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, upon starting the program, sometimes says that my system is unstable (again, no overclock)

These issues may be the result of multiple problems, both software and hardware related. At this point I'm just banging my head against the wall trying to narrow down the culprit. Thank you for your help.

I see that you have both MalwareBytes and BitDefender. Recently, there have been problems on systems with BitDefender and MBAM installed on the same system and the developers have said that this issue would be resolved in a future build.

Kindly follow the below steps -

    • Till the time we are troubleshooting the system, kindly remove MalwareBytes from the system using this **TOOL** . If the system becomes stable, well and good. If not, please remove BitDefender as well using this **TOOL**. Till the time there is no antivirus installed on your system, please make sure that Windows Defender is up and running.
    • I have highlighted a driver in RED. This is a problematic driver and it has been the culprit of many BSODs in the past. Kindly remove MSI Super Charger till the time your system is not stable.

Once you have performed the above steps, see if the system is stable or not. Do you get a BSOD during Prime95 testing as well?

You have one hell of a system :0)

Let me know how it goes and in case of any problems, feel free to post back ^_^

Re: Random crashes with and without BSOD

I uninstalled MBAM with the tool you provided and also uninstalled MSI Super Charger. Regarding Prime95, I have gotten a BSOD (or some sort of crash) but it isn't 100% reproducible. Crashes with Prime95 were almost exclusively with a CPU overclock. Honestly I think the problem there lies with my novice overclocking knowledge.

One thing to note is that yesterday I discovered my 850 EVO SSD firmware was outdated, so I updated it - probably unrelated but who knows.

I will post back here within the next week with a progress report.

    Thank you!

P.S. - From a security standpoint, would I be better off using Windows Defender + MBAM or just Bitdefender alone?

Re: Random crashes with and without BSOD

    Hi Andbrik ^_^,

I personally don't advise on overclocking the system because it provides little gains (until and unless you want to get all the juice of the system) in exchange of reduced life span of the system.

Good that you upgraded the firmware as well and thanks for letting me know about it

Regarding the security, my personal experience has been that Windows Defender also works wonder provided that you are a little aware about what files you open and what you don't

Let me know in case of any problem :)

Re: Random crashes with and without BSOD

No crashes over the past week. However, there was one time when my monitor read "no signal" until I restarted the computer. I had been AFK-ing an MMO for about 2 hours when this happened. Nothing I did allowed me to wake the screen. Anyway I'll post back here if anything else weird happens.

    --- Update ---

Computer froze when playing Bioshock Infinite (max graphics) and required hard reboot. I sent in my MSI 980ti for RMA and am waiting for it to come back. I will update with any developments.

Re: Random crashes with and without BSOD

    --- Update 2 ---

Turns out the graphics card isn't the problem. With the graphics card still out for RMA and no card installed, I ran Prime95 blend test with the CPU OC'd using the MSI "Game Mode" option enabled in BIOS (CPU 4.4 GHz up from 4.0 GHz and RAM 2400 MHz up from 2133 MHz). This caused the system to BSOD within 5 minutes in multiple blend test attempts; the WhoCrashed reports for those BSOD are shown below.

I think the problem may be insufficient voltage to the CPU and/or RAM, so I incrementally raised the CPU voltage to 1.400V (up from 1.250V) and RAM to 1.250V (up from 1.200V), which resulted in less crashes but hotter temps than I would like. I then decided to return to the stock speed of 4.00 GHz and change the CPU voltage to just 1.300V and leave RAM at 1.250V. An error stopped one of the workers after 3.5 hours (70 tests) but no BSOD.

Should I keep increasing the voltages? Any troubleshooting suggestions?

Re: Random crashes with and without BSOD

    --- Final Update ---

No crashes for at least a month now. Since my last update I have replaced my RAM and applied multiple BIOS and chipset updates. I went from having quad channel RAM (F4-2666C15Q-16GRR) to dual channel (F4-2400C15D-16GVR).

To summarize, the issue was either bad RAM, unstable chipset builds for the new Z170 boards, or a combination of the two. Hopefully this helps someone else with their troubleshooting.
