    Hi Tom,

I downloaded the file and extracted it as you said, but in my C:\Windows\Temp there are no folder called checksur. In fact there are no folders as you described. See the included file called error.
I downloaded the SURT, but I could not run it as the program claimed, that the windows update service is not installed. I think that this is the real problem.
    Can you help?

    Welcome to Sysnative :)

Please create all of the CheckSUR and other missing directories, and then place the files as described above.

Then we must work at getting SURT to run.

Please download FSS from here: Farbar Service Scanner Download

Put a check in every box, click "Scan", and post the log which opens.

    Thank you!

    Hi Itpusher,

A missing Windows Update service is just one of the factors contributing to your Windows Update failure, but a big one at that. Your CheckSUR log showed corrupt packages originating from KB2792100 which is an IE9 update which will be why IE9 is having issues.

@Richard, I have attached the registry export for all of those services if it helps. I haven't posted instructions yet as I wasn't sure how you wanted to deal with this. @Itpusher, for the time being, please ignore the attachment.

Re: Windows update is not running - win 7 x64

Thanks Tom. Let's just import them, my tool still has a couple of weeks of work left yet :)

@itpusher: Please now download Tom's attached .zip file (the one attached to his latest post). Inside will be a single registry script. Please double click on it and choose Yes to import.

Then please repeat the procedure with FSS (to generate a new logfile, please upload),

and then ensuring that the files have been placed in the temp directory as described above, please try again with the System Update Readiness Tool.

    Thank you!

    Hi Richard/Tom,

I imported the registry keys as you told me.

I ran the FSS once more and atached the logfile.

Then I tried to run the Windows6.1-KB947821-v26-x64 I still got problems.

    Plase advice.

    Hello again :)

Much better logfile! But...I forgot to include an important step in my instructions. Really sorry about that.

Please re-start your computer and try again. Should then work. Again, sorry for not mentioning this.

    Hi Itpusher,

To save others the time of downloading and translating the error, this was returned for both commands:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service
Can you open your start menu please, then type services.msc in the search box and click on it when it loads. Click Action > Export List and save this list to your Desktop, name it whatever you want, just make sure it's something easy to remember. Attach this list to your next post please.

    Hi Tom,

the list is calles services.txt - I think I found some of the problems. I ran the program MicrosoftFixit50202 and got the error that the credentials was not right or the like. It appears that I'm lacking real administrator rights. I tried to add administrator using the common script in cmd running as administrator - same problems.

Can you see head or tail?

PS! sorry that the services are in Danish.

Re: Windows update is not running - win 7 x64

    Hi Itpusher,

Strangely, the services aren't there, at all, yet they show in the FSS log. I've never seen anything like this before so I think it's best to have a look at the registry of those services before we continue:

    Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

    1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
    2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
    3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

      regedit /e %SYSTEMDRIVE%\tom982.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services"

    4. This will create a text file called tom982.txt in the root folder of your main drive (e.g. C:\tom982.txt). Please attach this to your next post.

    Hi Tom,

I have attached the registry file.

    Itupsher.
    Thank you for that.

Well, the services appear to have gone again.

A couple of possibilities. Either the damage extends beyond a single ControlSet, and a different ControlSet has been loaded, or something has actively/accidentally taken them out, possibly an infection, or they have become corrupt again (why??), or...something a little more complicated.

Please upload one more FSS report. Otherwise we might have to check your other control sets, although it seems a bit of a long shot, hence I would like a little more time to think.

Thank you. And not quite yet...

We are on the edge of something quite interesting actually.

At first a whole load of services were missing. FSS saw them as all missing. Tom repaired them. Then FSS saw them all as repaired. Good! But then you restarted the computer and told me that WU was still broken. So we ran FSS again. And now FSS shows the services as broken again.

So...the services vanished again between Tom fixing them and you trying out Windows Update/over the computer restart would be the likely explanation.

So...where have they gone? A second time?

Well, either they have vanished into a second control set (in which case we will fix all of your control sets and that will be that), or you are (most likely) infected.

Please try the fix attached here: http://www.sysnative.com/forums/wind...html#post42094

One more time. If they disappear again, I think our best bet would be to send you over to our Security Forum to get checked out. If it turns out not to be malware related, I will continue to help you with the other possibilities (such as the control set issues).

    How does that sound?

    Richard
    tom982 says thanks for this.
