Windows 8 - Out of Memory error

A friend of ours recently got a Windows 8 desktop computer. He has been having issues with "Out of Memory" error which shouldn't be happening.

    It's a 64-bit Windows 8 with 6 GB RAM.

He is not much of a gamer or I would suggest he try some of the Minecraft Java batch file suggestions out there to restrict memory of the game.

He just mainly listens to music, surfs the Internet, talks in chat, and does email, mostly.

He says that Apple's iTunes is constantly crashing. I suggested that he uninstall iTunes, reboot, and reinstall it to see if that helped.

He can't do without iTunes as he has an iPad and has his music local to sync with it.

Also suggested that he do a malware scan with Malwarebytes Antimalware to see if it finds anything.

    Anything else I should suggest?

    Yes please :)

That report contains a nice collection of stuff such as Event Logs and gives us a good overview of the system & what might be going wrong, even when there are no BSODs.

Re: Windows 8 - Out of Memory error

I would use Process Explorer to keep an eye on processes that are eating up the RAM.

Process Explorer (procexp.exe) can be downloaded direct from Microsoft servers here: http://live.sysinternals.com/procexp.exe

It's basically task manager on steroids. :-) Open it on the problem system and keep an eye on both Working Set and Private Bytes and see if one program is uses a high amount of either or both. Double clicking on a process will show more information on the process including RAM and CPU usage.

He says that Apple's iTunes is constantly crashing. I suggested that he uninstall iTunes, reboot, and reinstall it to see if that helped. He can't do without iTunes as he has an iPad and has his music local to sync with it.
There are alternatives to iTunes that will sync music with iPods and iPads. MediaMonkey is a good example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhQq2ghvjT4

Re: Windows 8 - Out of Memory error

Good thought Stephen on procexp.exe ... not sure he would want to use the alternative. Maybe it syncs now, but likely won't back it up and how long before Apple prevents it from working?

There is no reason it shouldn't work right, truthfully. Something is not right on Windows and/or iTunes/iCloud/QuickTime.

I hope my friend will post to get the help he needs. I still think he should uninstall iTunes and maybe even iCloud, then reboot and reinstall it/them.

I let him know how to get here and encouraged him to post. I hope he does.

Thank you all for your thoughts.

Re: Windows 8 - Out of Memory error

I understand about not wanting to use MediaMonkey, I just put it out as a suggestion. :-) BTW, if he backs up to iCloud, then there's no need to back up using iTunes. Again, it was just an idea to try if all else fails.

I agree with you though, reinstalling iTunes is a good first call.

Re: Windows 8 - Out of Memory error

If iTunes is re-installed, make sure it is done in the proper order; Apple software removed in the wrong order can result in further issues including the inability to re-install it.

Steps are for Vista/7, but Windows 8 is an offshoot of both and the steps should be the same.

Contacting Apple is also not a bad option for support in re-install steps for Windows 8 if you or your friend are uncomfortable following Vista/7 steps.

I sent John's link so he could do what John asked. Not sure if he has done that all yet.

Re: Windows 8 - Out of Memory error

I couldn't get him to successfully run those items from the BSOD thread yet, but I did suggest that he run JRT and AdwCleaner and it got rid of JZIP and Conduit.

We will see if that helps some.

I am still working with him on the other stuff. It's just hard to track him down. He gets sidetracked.

Re: Windows 8 - Out of Memory error

In my opinion, it seems to be a memory leak, or something is exhausting the heap, resulting in the out of memory error. I agree with checking which programs are consuming what resources.

Question is -- virtual or physical memory...?

If physical RAM, I would expect excessive paging to occur along with a gigantic page file!

Re: Windows 8 - Out of Memory error

Thanks guys! I will continue to try to get him to do the BSOD stuff, or maybe do a remote with him and do it for him so it can get done.

Hate to see Windows boxes doing stuff like this. If it hangs then it's as bad as BSOD with Windows not shut down properly and causing possible corruption of the system.
