BSOD problem with Dell Precision/Hibernation/Windows 11

Those errors appear to suggest a problem with hibernation and/or the page file. The 1.5 x RAM recommendation is an old wives tale and isn't current best practice. Set the paging file to be automatically managed (check the box at top left on that dialog).

This problem could also be your NVMe drive, so I suggest you download the Western Digital SSD Dashboard and use that to run an extended diagnostic test on the drive. Also check for firmware and/or driver updates with the SSD Dashboard.

Were these BSOD crashes or more general system crashes? Have you checked the %systemroot%\LiveKernelReports folder for any .dmp files there?

I haven't seen that error before but it could be due to a corrupt hibernation file. I would suggest using the stable build of Windows though.

@ubuysa: the firmware for the SSD is up-to-date and there were no errors reported by WD Dashboard extended diagnostics. I have reset the page file to automatic management.

@x-bluerobot: I don't always get the blue (green actually) screen, but the memory.dmp reports always the same error with the same first 3 args. There is an old dump file in the location you mentioned "C:\Windows\LiveKernelReports\NDIS-20221026-1045.dmp" and a few empty folders. I can try to remove the hibernation file and recreate it.

Yes, delete the hibernate file and recreate it, see whether that helps.

That's a very old file so we can ignore it. I was just wanted to see if we could find anymore information about that last error but deleting the hibernation file would be a good option.

Well, I still get crashes from time to time. I have resurrected my Dell Precision 5540 that I owned before the current 5570.
I thought that I might have reinstalled it, but fortunately not. Looking into the event log, I find the exact same error
BL_LOG_ERROR_RES_INVALID_PAGEFILE: Page file is invalide for hibernate resume.
Both laptops have one thing in common: their SSD are SN810 from WD (previous one is 1Tb, current one is 2Tb)
So I will get back to Dell because I start to think it is out of my hands.

I've done a bit of online research and this does seem to be a problem on some Dell laptops with Windows 11 (but not, apparently, with Windows 10). A web search will generate a handful of hits for this and similar problems, all related to Windows 11. I have not come across either a solution or a workaround.

TBH, if it were mine I would stop using the insider build(s) and install the latest production build. That may not solve your hibernation problem, but at least you'll be on a stable build. Either that, or avoid using hibernate completely.

Hi there,

The sequel of my adventures with this problem.
I ended up activating the MS support that I get with my MSDN subscription.
It took 5 months before they starting looking at the problem.
Obviously at some point the tech in charge was summoned by his boss to close the case.
Th diagnostic was the same as I got from you guys there:
- stop using the insider version
- most likely culprit: intcoed.sys that I should disable (unfortunately, if I do this on Dell Precision, I have no sound anymore. Worse the driver is installed together with the Intel graphics driver for the on core graphics chipset)
However I am suspicious that they just got the diagnostic from here!
Mainly because I never got any explanation for the message about BL_LOG_ERROR_RES_INVALID_PAGEFILE
that should have been escalated to developer teams (IMHO) because this is not an insignificant message.

So I reinstalled Windows 11 with the regular stable version.
And it worked: no more crashes.
But only for a few weeks, because it started again!
With the exact same parameters reported on the BSOD.

And lately I see that Windows 11 24H2 will forbid intcoed.sys!
These apps will prevent Windows 11 version 24H2 from installing on your PC

Hopefully there will be a new grahics/audio stack for Intel processors.
