I just got back from Honduras where it seems that everybody with a cellphone uses WhatsApp messaging instead of standard text messages. They still make normal voice calls, but when I sent a text using my Honduran (Tigo) number, they said they didn't see it. But what I realized is that they were looking for a WhatsApp message, not a standard SMS. My SMS transmitted, and if they looked for a normal text, it was there.
I've never used WhatsApp and I'm willing to try it. In fact it would be a good way to communicate with my Honduran friends when I'm in the U.S. I get a fail to transmit notice when I try to send international SMS to some numbers, so it woud solve that problem. But aren't there some legitimate security and privacy concerns? I could ask elsewhere and get plenty of answers both pro and con, but I trust folks here more than on other forums.
