Ace, as a side note - you can always try to steal the handle to the locked file from the process holding it (via duplicatehandleex) and then try to close it. m.

Problems with win32k symbols on Windows 8.1

I need your confirmation, because I can't find symbols for tagPROCESSINFO and other tag* symbols inside win32k.pdb for Windows 8.1 :( I have them with win32k.pdb for Windows 7, so maybe they are gone with Windows 8...? m.g.

TomasD: I couldn't agree more, these are the same scenarios I use those symbol files. But I don't put them into the _NT_SYMBOL_PATH, because of the synchronous symbol loading (takes more time) - I add them only as necessary (through .sympath+ in WinDbg and via 'Configure symbol paths' in...

Another approach to boot problems (incl. BSOD)

It's just an idea. Some of the boot BSODs leave no dump files and the analysis is quite hard. The same is for other startup problems, when the boot never ends and you have no idea what happens. I think this might be a good place for Global Logger; enabling it is just a small change in the SYSTEM...

Unfortunately, since 8.1 kit (6.3.9600) xperfview is not available any more :( But you can use the WPA, which covers most of the functionality available in xperfview :) m.g.
